YOUTH ENTREPRENEURS COMING TO INDEPENDENCE
Founded by the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation in 1991, Youth Entrepreneurs (YE) provides high school youth with business and entrepreneurial education and experiences that will help them prosper and become contributing members of society. Since then, YE has partnered with school districts in Kansas serving 10,000 students. Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, YE will be offered in the Independence, Missouri school district. This expansion across state lines is a testament to the value of the YE program, as well as the desire of educators to provide the best possible curriculum to prepare students for success.
"This is an outstanding opportunity for YE to begin servings more of the Kansas City metropolitan area," said Kylie Stupka. "We knew this was going to be a year of growth and opportunities, and we're thrilled to have support for our program that we're able to reach students in Missouri."
The primary focus of YE is to reach at-risk youth. More than 65 percent of students in the Independence School District are economically disadvantaged, making the district a natural fit for the YE program. YE is in the process of securing funds to launch the program at William Chrisman, Truman and Van Horn High Schools in Independence. "With YE, our students will now have access to the resources outside of the classroom and be given opportunities to participate in the types of projects that encourage economic thinking and education beyond high school," said Dr. Jim Hinson, superintendent for the Independence School District. "We are thrilled to be working so closely with the YE team to get this up and running for the fall."
Bringing YE to Independence will not only serve the students, but also the local businesses that now have the opportunity to volunteer with the program and provide valuable hands-on experiences. To learn more about how to get involved with the Independence expansion, or any other YE projects, contact Priscilla McInnes at priscilla@yeks.org or 913.745.8095 or visit www.yeks.org.

INTERVIEW WITH JULIE VEST
James: Julie, when did you start Absolute Advertising Specialties? Julie: As a home business, I started Absolute Advertising Specialties in 1994. I also joined the Chamber that same year. James: What service do you offer? Julie: Our motto is "We will absolutely put your company
logo anywhere you want." Our goal is to brand your company on any form of
promotional product. James: What are some examples of products you have put
logos on? Julie: We have put
logos on about anything including: jackets, shirts, mugs, aprons, tote-bags,
key rings, magnets and much more. James: Any other unique services? Julie: We also create political signs for elections, client
gift sets including baskets, executive gifts and holiday gifts. James: Tell me about yourself. Julie: I grew up in Independence and was excited to get
my business going in the community. I'm
married to David Vest, who is very supportive of my business. We have two children together, David Jr. and Alexandra. James: Why did you
join the Chamber? Julie: I joined the Chamber because I knew the networking
opportunities that would be open for my business. My current client list is primarily chamber
members. One of the best things about my
Chamber experience is the incredible people I've met. For me it's the best way to do business. James: Any stories you'd like to share? Julie: I'll tell you one about my dedication. I had a
client that I created some tradeshow material for and they needed it earlier
than when the UPS truck was delivering it. I actually flagged down the UPS truck, got the package and delivered it
to my client. James: I would definitely say you're dedicated, how can members
reach you? Julie: You can send me an email at absoluteads@sbcglobal.net or give
me a call at 816-739-2128. For more information on Absolute Advertising Specialist
