WHEN SCHOOLS GLEAM, KIDS BEAM

The
desire to get involved and better our community has continued since the
historic annexation and Extreme School Makeover in 2008. The Independence School
District is keeping the momentum
moving with the second annual Project Shine. One day, every year, the
District will lead volunteer-based projects at designated schools to clean,
paint and update. Project Shine is a win-win, bettering our schools
while unifying our community around projects that support the heart of our
district and city - our children.
Project
shine is
slated for July 17th,
2010 at the following schools: -
Truman High School
- Glendale Elementary School
-
Luff Elementary School
- Ott Elementary School
- Randall Elementary School
This event is not only
good for the district and the community - it is a lot of fun, too! The more volunteers involved, the more
projects can be completed. You can
register to be a volunteer www.ourschoolsshine.org. Choose the school of your choice on the
application. If you do not have a
preference, you will simply be placed at a school. Church groups, alumni groups, service clubs
or friends and family are all invited to get involved. Volunteers will receive a phone call the week
of Project Shine stating where they
will be working and what time to check in.
Together, we can make our
community shine! For more information, click here.

BOARD
OF DIRECTORS VOTE UNANIMOUSLY TO SUPPORT STORMWATER/PARKS TAX RENEWAL
On Wednesday, June 9, 2010, the Independence
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to endorse and support
the Storm Water/Parks Tax Renewal. The StormWater/Parks
Tax Renewal election is scheduled for August 3, 2010. The ballot question asks Independence
residents to renew the city's one-eighth cent parks sales tax and the
one-fourth cent stormwater sales tax. The
stormwater tax will continue to maintain and improve the storm drainage
system, which protects our homes and businesses during heavy rains, and the
park sales tax will keep our parks, trails and recreation facilities clean,
safe and up-to-date.
Roger Hershey who presented to the board, emphasized this is not a new tax
and that over 40% of the sales taxes are paid by non-residents.
Rick Hemmingsen,
President of the Independence Chamber of Commerce said, "The tax renewal is vital to the growth of the Independence
business community. The benefits we have
seen from the current stormwater and park sales tax have made a positive difference
in our quality of life. By maintaining and improving
the parks and stormwater the city will continue to thrive and attract residents
and businesses."

"INSPIRING GREATNESS"
Looking for a summer read that is truly inspiring? Inspiring Greatness, a Community's
Commitment to Unity, a book compiled by the Independence School District
Board of Education and Superintendent, Dr. Jim Hinson, chronicles the historic
school annexation in western Independence
and Sugar Creek. From the initial meetings between concerned community
members, civic leaders and school district officials to the victory at the
voting polls to arbitration to territorial battles with the Kansas
City, Missouri School
District to Extreme School Makeover, Inspiring Greatness covers all aspects of the transition. It is an
insider's account of the fight to reclaim control of schools and neighborhoods
in decline. Numerous Independence Chamber of Commerce members played
critical roles in the transition and are profiled in Inspiring Greatness. This is a must-read for anyone involved in our
community, as many will recognize their friends, neighbors and, perhaps,
themselves in the pages of this book. It is an important account of happenings
that changed the course of history for Independence
and Sugar Creek by giving our youth new opportunities in education and
revealing the deep-rooted spirit of volunteerism and selflessness that exists
among the citizens of our community. Inspiring Greatness, a
Community's Commitment to Unity is available at www.isdinspiringgreatness.org. All proceeds benefit the Independence School
District Foundation's Student Care Fund.
