ARC RECEIVES SMALL BUSINESS AWARD

 ARC

Independence Chamber of Commerce member Athletic & Rehabilitation Center was recently named  the 2010 Small Business of the Year and received the Mr. K Award from the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.  ARC, called a "rising star" by one of the Chamber judges, was selected in part because of it's growth  -- 40 to 60 employees this year and the addition of the Liberty and St. Joseph clinics in 2009, and Olathe clinic in 2010.

Another reason they were chosen was because of their focus on high quality outcomes for patients and innovation in developing programs for employers that help them hire the best employees, rehabilitate their employees when injured and provide proactive sports performance and wellness programs. The Independence Clinic is located at 4460 South Noland Rd and headed by Ben Peterson MSPT, DPT.

CHAMBER HOSTS JACKSON COUNTY EXPRESSWAY COALITION

Expressway

On Thursday May 13, 2010 the Independence Chamber of Commerce hosted the Jackson County Expressway Coalition.    Rick Hemmingsen, President of the Independence Chamber of Commerce introduced Judge Jack Gant, who in 1991 helped head up the coalition that lobbied for money for the Expressway.

Judge Gant spoke to the group about the history, including the partnerships among leaders in Independence, Kansas City and Sugar Creek who worked together to obtain $60 million in funding for the Expressway project.  He talked about the outcomes and accomplishments of these partnerships: 1) Building Selsa Road Interchange 2) Replacing the Chouteau Bridge in Kansas City, and 3) the extension of the Little Blue Expressway North to U.S. 24 Highway, expected to be open in November 2011.

 LEAD Class

On Thursday, May 20, 2010, the Independence Chamber of Commerce celebrated the 2009-2010 L.E.A.D. graduating class.

The ceremony honored 10 business professionals who participated in the L.E.A.D., (Leadership, Education, Action and Development), program.  L.E.A.D. is an eight month program sponsored by the Independence Chamber of Commerce.  The program is designed to provide a network of informed leaders with a commitment to the continued growth and development of Independence.

In October, the class met for a two day orientation.  After the orientation, the L.E.A.D. class met every third Thursday to explore such topics as education, health care, government, tourism, image, social services and economic development.  The participants were also required to fulfill 8 hours of community service.
