 The Origins of Interpreting 

 

Communication has always been a key element throughout the ages to convey messages to others. Eventually, the interaction between different tribes, peoples, cultures, or entities, would define the need for interpreting as essential.

 

The urge for conquering lands made men feel powerful and, as a way to impose themselves in the defeated region, the dominant people would spread their language. Historically, the slave class had to interpret for the nobility and were expected to be multilingual - something which was considered undignified.

Galicia is a region located in north-western Spain, famous for its shellfish, beautiful landscapes and the Way of St. James.

 

But did you know that there is a co-official language along with Castilian Spanish in Galicia? It is called Galician and is spoken by around 3 million people in the world today.

Have you ever had a conversation with a foreigner who used a lot of strange and curious English terms? Maybe it was a German.

 

The Germans (and people in many other countries) use a lot of English terms in their everyday life. Most of these terms refer to technology, but Germans love to coin new words, especially in the marketing and advertising business. These words can lead to misunderstandings and funny situations when they are used in a conversation with other English speakers.
