The Art of Translating Poetry

Poems are made up of three essential parts: their literal meaning, their hidden symbolic meaning, and the flow or rhythm of the verse. It takes an expert translator with a background in literature to successfully translate all three of these elements into another language. We as readers cannot fully appreciate the extent of this effort.

Can you say hello in Welsh? Helô, Hylô, or Shwmae

 

Shots Did you know that Welsh is spoken fluently by over half a million people in Wales - that's over 20% of the total population?  

 

Cymraeg, the Welsh name for the language, is a Celtic language which is closely related to Cornish and Breton. But did you know that Welsh is one of Europe's oldest living languages and that the Welsh spoken today is directly descended from the language of the Sixth Century?
