Dear Colleagues:

For physicians to successfully treat their patients it takes more than just speaking the same language. They must also have an understanding of the local culture as well as any issues specific to a particular patient population. In the United States, much of the literature is focused on improving communication between American doctors and foreign-born patients.

More recently, however, the growing shortage of physicians in the United States, particularly in rural parts of the country, has resulted in an increase in the number of foreign-born doctors treating American patients. What types of issues do these doctors face?  How are they able to overcome barriers?  What methods are hospitals adopting to help these physicians?

We have recently written a white paper on this topic entitled "Learning to Speak Iowan". We hope you take this opportunity to read the article, and that you find it both interesting and useful.
