In recent weeks the Arab world has been rocked by a stunning chain of events, culminating in the ouster of autocrats in Tunisia and Egypt as well as violent protests in Libya, Bahrain, and Yemen.  For two such autocrats feeling the heat of mass demonstrations, one tactic has been used in an attempt to reconcile political differences and appeal to the angry throngs of citizens: dialect.

Arabic is a Semitic language originating from the Arabian Peninsula and Horn of Africa whose various dialects are spoken by nearly 221 million people world-wide.  Despite huge geographic distinctions in dialects, Modern Standard Arabic is the common literary form of the language and the dominant language of culture, media, and government. It is the official language of 22 countries and one of six official languages of the United Nations, the inextricable result of the rise of Islam as a major world religion.

Very rarely does an idiom in one language have an appropriate translation by an equivalent idiom in another language. Despite the fact that the original meaning cannot always be discerned, these translations provide us with insight into other cultures. Often, they provide with a bit of humor too...

Here are some entertaining mistranslations that U.S. companies have sent abroad.

The "Got Milk" ads, originally translated as "Are you lactating?"  in Spanish (¿Tiene leche?). Intended for the Mexican market, it kept the Spanish-speaking audience laughing for quite some time.
