Language Connections

November 17, 2009

Dear Colleagues:

In addition to Latin America, Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe, Africa is also becoming an emerging region for outsourcing clinical research. This is mostly due to changing requirements including the need for greater patient diversity and subject numbers in clinical trials, as well as improved research environments in some African countries. South Africa in particular is a reflection of this trend, due largely to the fact that it is the most economically developed African country with better regulatory standards for conducting clinical trials.

We have recently published an article in the November issue of Applied Clinical Trials entitled "South Africa Today" (pp58-62) which discusses the current environment for clinical research in the region, and addresses ethical concerns that have plagued clinical trials there in the past. What are the factors that must be addressed by companies interested in conducting clinical research in the country? What are the language(s) and culture(s) of the majority of subjects participating in clinical research? How can sponsors ensure that international ethical standards are maintained? We hope you take this opportunity to read the article available via the following link, and that it provides you with new information.

As a language service provider for over fifteen years, we are well aware of the importance of native language communication. Our life science experts have translation experience in over one hundred languages, including the most common languages for clinical trial documentation in South Africa as well as other African countries that are currently conducting clinical research.

We welcome any inquiries or comments you may have regarding the article or our services.
