Greetings!

Well, I'm a little late in getting out this edition of Les Communique, but I have a fairly good excuse.  My partner and I just drove over 2,500 miles from Alexandria, VA to Tucson, AZ to permanently relocate.  Our travel was all about the destination, with little interest in the journey as we (and our two cats) were relocating to our new home in northern Tucson.  Travel, just as with life though, should also be about the journey.  Sometimes, it's the most exciting part of the trip.  Thus, I'm dedicating this edition of Les Communique to travel and adventure.  Yes, in spite of high gas prices and poor customer service and rising costs for air travel, some people are still traveling.

You may have already noticed that we now offer you the option to sign up on an email list in your region, as we want to start tailoring our newsletters for different parts of the country.  For now, we'll start sending out both an east and a west Les Communique.  Hope this allows us to better serve you.  Please let us know if we are hitting the mark.

The Politics of Aging
Getting old may just be the next great movement in LGBT history
Excerpt from the September 2008 edition of Curve magazine article by Victoria A. Brownworth

"Many are bracing for the election in November as the pinnacle of their autumn.  The looming election has raised other concerns for me, however, some spurred by that fall chill.  Queers never seem to think about getting old.  We are the quintessential youth seekers.  Everything about the queer lifestyle seems to demand eternal, unending youth.  But, like everyone else, we age.  It creeps up.  The summers get shorter, the days and years whiz by and suddenly you are middle-aged.  Middle-aged?  Yikes!  How did that happen?...

...So what happens when our closest lesbian family begins to break down-how do we find community to hold us together as we age and die?  This is an issue the queer community has not fully addressed.  It makes me nauseated to even broach the subject.  And yet dealing with the consequences of growing older is an element of our survival that we desperately need to deal with, since a full generation of queers is now officially old.  We need assisted-living facilities that cater specifically to a queer clientele.  We need centers for elderly queers.  We need community events that focus on aging.  We need to plan for our old age.  We need to know what we will do and where we will go when the time comes that we can no longer manage on our own."

How to Find an On-time Flight

reprinted from The Week magazine

Be early to rise.  At this time of year, thunderstorms tend to hit in late afternoon.  Book flights for as early as 6 or 7AM because as a rule, later departures are more often delayed.
Don't fly direct.  So-called direct flights aren't what they sound like, and are notorious for stopping en route.  Nonstop flights are your best option.
Fly on Saturdays.  The National Air Traffic Controllers Association often recommends Saturday as the "best day" to travel.  For the best days to fly from 29 of the nation's largest airports, go to NATCA.
Switch airports.  Try a city's regional airports.  Last year, more flights left on time from Chicago's Midway than from O'Hare International.  For "on-time statistics by flight, airline, or airport," consult Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

How about geocaching?
 geocaching
Okay, now that I've heard of this hobby for the second time, I decided it was time to mention it in Les Communique.  Gillian Kendall, in Curve magazine, says geocaching is "part treasure hunt, part global hide-and-seek.   As addictive as crack but way less expensive, geocaching is something you can do with all your surplus time and energy.  Warning:  After three finds, you're hooked."

Wikipedia says, "Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Today, well over 800,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.

Heys Xcase - This "polycarbonate plastic" suitcase doesn't scuff easily and handles tricky "terrain with aplomb."  $180

Books for the trip
Chosen by Karin Slaughter
Best-selling author of a series of acclaimed suspense novels whose latest book is titled "Fractured"

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc
by Mark Twain
Twain's last published novel and, by his account, his best work.  He was fascinated by this subject and investigated St. Joan's life for more than a decade before writing her story.

Gone With the Wind
by Margaret Mitchell
People tend to forget that Mitchell won the Pulitzer for a reason.  The Scarlett O'Hara who exists on the page is far more powerful and engaging than the one on screen.

Wuthering Heights
by Emily Bronte
Bronte's use of nonlinear story telling and flashback was a technical triumph compared with other novels of the day.  When you think about the changes editor Maxwell Perkins made to the first draft of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, you wonder if he had Bronte in mind.
