Greetings!

Okay ladies, I met this week with Leslie Calman , Executive Director of the Mautner Project.  I asked her why we needed a separate organization dedicated to lesbian health.  She said she hoped someday we wouldn't need it, but today's lesbians as a group, are an unhealthy lot.  We tend to be overweight, drink and smoke more than the population at large, and...don't get regular checkups like we should!

So, I'm dedicating this newsletter to your health.  Enjoy.

Mental Floss:
Exercising your brain
synopsis from MOAA's Military Officer magazine
brain
There are exciting developments emerging in brain studies:
1.  Dr. Molly Wagster, chief of the Neuropsychology of Aging Branch, National Institute on Aging (NIA) in Bethesda, MD says, "There's evidence that the aging brain can adapt and change more than we ever thought," and sees increasing evidence of the potential for maintaining-or even gaining-brain function through exercise, mental stimulation, and diet.
2.  A neuropsychologist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Paul Nussbaum, says:  "The brain is this wonderful miracle-the universe's single greatest system ever...it's not as rigid as we used to think," instead, the brain constantly is reorganizing and making new connections, a concept known as "neuroplasticity".
3.  Equally exciting, scientists have shown the brain can generate new cells, a process known as "neurogenesis".

Wake Up to the Importance of Exercise
Working Out Improves Sleep Patterns

 athlete
reprinted from Spark People by Rebecca Pratt, staff writer

You stayed up late last night to finish a project, woke up groggy only to realize that you'd slept through the alarm clock, skipped breakfast, then almost fell asleep in the middle of an important morning meeting. It's now mid-afternoon and, as you're having yet another cup of coffee to stifle yet another yawn, you realize you're seemingly sleep walking through your days.

You're not the only one. Nightly sleep for the average American has dropped from 10 hours (before the invention of the lightbulb) to 6.9 hours, with a third of adults now getting even less than that! In fact, nearly half of all adults admit they...

Eat, Pray, Love
A "Must Read" book by Elizabeth Gilbert

eat, pray, love
Okay, I must admit I resisted reading this book for some time, mostly because it was on everybody's list of books to read.  Well, turns out is was on everybody's list to read because it is a REALLY good book.  It is about one women's search for everything across Italy, India, and Indonesia.  Do yourself a favor and read it.
