| Mental Floss:
Exercising your brain
synopsis from MOAA's Military Officer magazine
There are exciting developments emerging in brain studies:
1. Dr. Molly Wagster, chief of the Neuropsychology of Aging Branch, National Institute on Aging (NIA) in Bethesda, MD says, "There's evidence that the aging brain can adapt and change more than we ever thought," and sees increasing evidence of the potential for maintaining-or even gaining-brain function through exercise, mental stimulation, and diet.
2. A neuropsychologist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Paul Nussbaum, says: "The brain is this wonderful miracle-the universe's single greatest system ever...it's not as rigid as we used to think," instead, the brain constantly is reorganizing and making new connections, a concept known as "neuroplasticity".
3. Equally exciting, scientists have shown the brain can generate new cells, a process known as "neurogenesis".

Working Out Improves Sleep Patterns
reprinted from Spark People by Rebecca Pratt, staff writer You stayed up late last night to finish a project, woke up groggy only to realize that you'd slept through the alarm clock, skipped breakfast, then almost fell asleep in the middle of an important morning meeting. Eat, Pray, Love
A "Must Read" book by Elizabeth Gilbert
Okay, I must admit I resisted reading this book for some time, mostly because it was on everybody's list of books to read. Well, turns out is was on everybody's list to read because it is a REALLY good book. It is about one women's search for everything across Italy, India, and Indonesia. Do yourself a favor and read it. | |
