Greetings!

Whew!  Its been a busy week for Les Connections and there's more ahead.  Our Launch and Networking Event last Saturday was a great success; despite torrential rains and a tornado watch.  We bottled 60 bottles of Les Connections wine and met some new friends (okay, we drank a little wine too). ;-)

This week, we have another Top Golf outing in Kingstowne, VA and encourage any golf enthusiasts in the the Mid-Atlantic region to come out for the McDonald's LPGA tournament at Havre de Grace, Maryland this weekend.  Next week, our VP, Gerda, is hosting a party at her house in Alexandria, VA, and we all intend to enjoy Capital Pride Events June 13, 14 and 15.  Oh yeah, Aqua Divas is also planning another kayaking event on June 14 or 15.  See more details

As you can see, the stuff above is all happening in the greater DC Metro Area.  But, we know we have folks on our email list from at least 17 states outside that area so we will soon start providing information relevant to them.  If anyone is interested in being a part of connecting our community across the country, please let us hear from you.  We are looking for "associates" to keep us informed about the important events in your part of the world.  See more details below...

By the way, did you know you can now buy discounted Washington Mystics tickets through Les Connections?  See the details below...

Hope life finds you happy, healthy and able to take some time to smell the flowers.

Take Care, Linda

So - here I am, writing to you on the morning after the California State Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that denying same-sex couples the right to marry makes them second class citizens, therefore, same-sex couples must have the same right to marry as heterosexual couples under California's state constitution!  Let's give California a huge standing ovation!  And, let's savor this moment - before we start thinking about what's to come as far as negative ramifications.  While it's a huge step forward that approximately 110,000 same sex couples in California have already registered as domestic partners during the 2000 U.S. Census, I know that, in a state with over 38 million residents, there are hundreds of thousands of same sex couples who today are feeling, as one man said in front of the San Francisco courthouse where the ruling came down, a new 'sense of well being' and 'affirmation of themselves and their love partnerships'.

As my colleague and friend attorney Evan Wolfson of Freedom to Marry says, the ramifications, whatever they will be, aren't backlash, they are just the normal 'patchwork' that occurs when a civil rights battle is being waged in our country.  It is difficult, yes, when you hear anti-gay/pro-hate folks say that the judges are 'liberal activists' who are 'overstepping' their bounds, however, we know that yesterday's ruling is a beautiful example of how our three part democracy is SUPPOSED to work, when the obvious inequity occurring is bigotry, apathy and/or ignorance within a majority that in some circles is very intentionally trying to deny an oppressed minority group their fundamental American, human rights!

And as my friend the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State's executive director, said of the ruling, "This decision is an important victory for church-state separation. The court majority made it very clear that civil marriage is a secular institution governed by principles of freedom.  The court also made it clear that no congregation can be forced to marry people in violation of their theological standards," Lynn continued. "That's a strong reaffirmation of religious liberty."

Vision is Everything

In my article today then, in honor of the California Supreme Court's decision, I'd like to introduce to you the concept of vision and it's vital importance in your life.  Simply put, vision is everything.  Everything springs from vision, including life itself, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  The vision you have today for your life, whether you consciously choose it or not, definitely impacts what your life looks like tomorrow.  Really!  Since vision is so important I would ask you - have you ever taken time to explore what your greatest visions for your life are?  Or, do you live life without a guiding vision?  Do you, like so many, live in reaction to everyone else's vision?  Do you care and/or understand the potential benefits of having a vision for your life that wells up from some heartfelt self-reflection and imaginative fancy?  And, if you have a vision, are you living your life in unison with that vision?

Shout Out!!

To:  Capital Country Dance Club Troupe

Congratulations to Laurie Bennett and the rest of the Capital Country Dance Club Troupe for winning 1st place in the Team Couples Division at the Tampa, Florida gay/lesbian hoedown.  They were the most diverse troupe competing:  widest age range (from 25 to 70), the largest size difference (5'3" - 6'6"), and...of course, no surprise to us, the most women of any team competing, with 13 of the 15 members being women.

Huge Congrats to All!!

Got Associates?
Les Connections wants to serve our community, but we need help!

We are very pleased to announce that Les Connections is growing fast.  We want to keep your support and are therefore very serious about providing you with the information and services you are looking for.  Gerda and I both live in Alexandria, Virginia, so we are able to "represent" in the greater DC Metro Area.  As I mentioned above though, we now have folks on our email list from 17 other states and at least one other country.  Okay, two if you count Hawaii (just kidding).

We believe the answer to ensuring we have the outreach we need to adequately serve our community is our "Associate" program.   Here's where you come in.  Are you "out and about" in your local community?  If you know what's up in your area and would like to work with us to "Connect Our Community", we'd love to hear from you.

For now, we'll just be looking for you to help us spread the word about LesConnections.com and tell us about lesbian groups and cool events in your area.  We'll see where it goes from there.  One thing is for sure, we can't "Connect Our Community" around the country without your help.

Contact linda@lesconnections.com to discuss being an associate.

Restore Stores

Saw a posting from a member of the FEMAIL2Female Yahoo Group regarding a Habitat for Humanity Restore Store in Manassas, Virginia.  Guess it often has miscellaneous items for renovations.  She said it was a great place to get paint for cheap if you aren't too particular about the color.  They also have doors, windows, used appliances, used cabinets, plumbing supplies and other items.  They'll also take your donations of like items.

Well, I thought this was a great reasource to share, so did a little research.  Guess what?  These stores are all over the US (as I'm sure some of you already know).  Here's the link to find a location near you Habitat Stores.  And, did you know about Habitat's Women's Build Program?  Check it out here:
