Greetings!

Hello there.  As many of you know, we conducted a survey in March to get feedback on where we should focus our efforts to best serve you.  Many of you responded with great feedback; thanks!  What we heard loud and clear is:
1.  You like being informed about what's going on in our area of interest to our community
2.  You like being informed about lesbian-owned businesses you might need and want to support.
3.  You were somewhat torn though about whether we should offer an on-line review of these businesses, so we are continuing to think about that one.
4.  You (82% of the respondents) are very interested in participating in networking and social events, so we'll continue to build our events program.

We appreciate all the feedback you've provided, through both the survey and via other means.  We want to provide what you want, and will always strive to get it right.

Thanks, Linda

Before You Reserve the U-Haul....
Legal advice from Rochelle Richardson, PLLC, YourDCLawFirm.com

Hello.  My name is Rochelle E. Richardson, Esq. and I am the Principal of The Law Office of Rochelle E. Richardson, PLLC.  My practice focuses on the areas of Veterans Benefits nationally, and Family Law and Estate Planning in the District of Columbia.

...What you need to know about the DC Equality Amendment Act of 2006

Everyone knows the joke.  We all love to tell it.  We all hate to hear it.  Nevertheless, some things just "are".  Lesbians and our rush to couple and cohabitate in domestic bliss is just "one of those things".

So, if you and your new love have decided that one of you should not renew your lease and it is time for you to make that call to U-Haul, and you plan to live in the District of Columbia, you may want to consider the DC Domestic Partnership Equality Amendment Act of 2006 ("The Act") and what it means for your relationship.

The Act became effective on April 4, 2006. Essentially, it gives legal rights to registered domestic partners that are similar to the rights afforded married spouses.  So, while you are not allowed to "marry" in the District of Columbia, the District of Columbia affords you the opportunity to "make it legal" and it is up to you to determine whether or not you intend to make such a statement about your relationship.

I believe that what many of us miss about this is that the sword cuts both ways.  When the law affords you the right and opportunity to register and make a public statement regarding your commitment to each other, failing to or deciding not to do so can make just as loud a statement as marching down there to register and sending out announcements, complete with your registry instructions at Williams Sonoma.  Both action and inaction may impact the way that your relationship is viewed not only by society in general, but also by the law.

Suede celebrates 25th Anniversary with a new CD and big band concert

Suede "Dangerous Mood," the eagerly awaited new CD from pop/jazz/blues vocalist Suede, featuring pianist Janice Friedman and the 12 piece Dangerous Big Band, will be available to the public on May 15, 2008.

The inaugural celebration concert kicking off the national release tour will be held where Suede's 25 year career began, in the Baltimore/Washington corridor, on Saturday, May 31 in Washington, DC at the historic Church of the Epiphany, 1317 G St., NW. Concert time is 8pm. The events on Sunday for LGCW are a brunch at Starfish Cafe from 11:30 - 1:30, then the annual shop with suede auction to benefit LGCW at 4pm at St's Monica and James Episcopal Church - both on 8th St. Tickets and more information are available online at www.suedewave.com.

Suede's last DVD release currently airs nationally on PBS stations. Her recording of "Emily Remembers" garnered national radio airplay and was the number one song of the year on Washington DC's WJZW radio thanks to Al Santos' Sunday Jazz Brunch show. She began her career in the Baltimore/Annapolis/DC area playing local bar gigs 25 years ago and has gone on to fill the best concert halls and jazz clubs nationwide - all with her own company, Easily Suede Music.

One part rat pack and one part Rosie Clooney, Suede is the "Diva la Difference" - sassy, classy and fun. She plays piano, trumpet and guitar, but voice is her first instrument and entertaining is her first love. On this new release she is backed by her New York based, hand picked, Dangerous Big Band of core trio and  9 piece horn section.

Imagine a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and Bette Midler, add a dash of Louis Armstrong, and you might get some idea of Suede's powerful presence, musical talents, and well honed skills. She is a consummate entertainer and song stylist among the likes of Tony Bennett and company - the classic singer's singer. Suede sings original material and pop, blues and jazz standards like nobody you've ever heard. Think sophisticated pop/jazz; think naughty blues with a sizzling trumpet, think love songs that make you swoon, think funny, think wow, what a voice!

Thank you for your interest in and support of, Les Connections.  We are grateful for the time you spend with us and welcome any feedback you'd care to give.  Send emails to Linda at: thehej@lesconnections.com.
