UPCOMING Lunch and Learn Workshop
Wednesday, July 9
11:00am - 3:00pm
at Ramada Minneapolis Northwest (formerly Grand Rios)
6900 Lakeland Avenue North, Brooklyn Park, MN  55428
Lunch Provided

Understanding DimXpert and TolAnalyst - DimXpert will apply dimensions and tolerances to 3D parts according to the requirements of the ASME Y14.41-2003 standard, saving you time and money by eliminating the need for 2D prints or paper drawings for manufacturing.

TolAnalyst eliminates the need for hand calculations and manual entry of dimensions and tolerances. Tolerance stack-ups are calculated and you are shown features and tolerances have the greatest impact on the stack-up. This allows you to easily optimize your design, thereby reducing manufacturing costs.

Administrative Bootcamp - Dave Padelford will be demonstrating the benefits of using the admin image along with installation manager for streamlined deployment.  The use of SolidWorks RX will help eliminate the overhead of updating and maintaining your CAD systems.

Lunch and Learn Workshops are free for customers with current subscription service contracts.  Registration is required.  Please visit http://www.symsolutions.com/events.shtml for registration information.

Subscription Service Policy Changes
Starting July 16th 2008, SolidWorks Corporation will be increasing the fees associated with "reinstalling" expired subscriptions or purchasing initial contracts separate from the initial purchase of the software.

Currently, the Reinstallation Fee is $500 per seat, in addition to the regular annual subscription service fee.  Effective July 16, the fee will increase to $850 per seat PER YEAR.  For example, a customer with a SolidWorks Office Professional license with service that expired in June 30, 2006 can get back onboard for $1,995 now ($500+$1495).  After July 16, the cost will increase to $3,195 ($850*2 + $1495).

The longer a contract has been expired, the greater the cost to "reinstall" the service.  So, if you are not covered by current subscription service, the time to act is NOW.  Annual subscription fees vary by product.  Please email us at customerservice@symsolutions.com for an exact quote.

Network Licensing Changes
Effective June 2, 2008, SolidWorks Corporation has changed pricing for network licenses.  Previously, network licenses were sold at a premium - $500 per seat for SolidWorks and $1000 per seat for COSMOSWorks.  Now, a flat fee of $2000 will be charged for a SolidWorks Network Installation which will support an unlimited number of SolidWorks and COSMOSWorks licenses.

Customers who already have a network SolidWorks or COSMOS license in place can add additional network licenses or convert existing standalone licenses to the network at no additional charge.  (NOTE:  Subscription Service for networked COSMOS license is still slightly higher than for standalone seats.  Also, some "add-on" products, such as PDMWorks Workgroup Contributor Network and SolidWorks Routing Add-on still carry a higher price for network licenses.)

Where Hot Design Ideas Flow Easily
Lava Design leverages SolidWorks to maximize nearly every phase of their product design and development services

One design firm in the Twin Cities to watch for is Lava Design, Inc., an agile team of award winning industrial designers who have applied the art of complex surfacing to clients as diverse as Octane Fitness, makers of a top selling elliptical machine, to local hardware tool giant Warner Manufacturing.  SolidWorksFounded by award-winning industrial designer Jim Easley in 1996, Lava Design has helped hundreds of companies develop new products from consumer electronics and medical devices, to light commercial and industrial products.

"Our core competencies are in industrial design and product engineering.  Our designers use SolidWorks to present the design concept, generate the CAD model, and then engineer for manufacture," explains Paul A. Pilosi, Principal, who joined Lava Design's talent pool a few years ago.  "We specialize in complex forms and advanced surfacing using SolidWorks."

Pilosi attributes much of the Lava Design's quick agility to bring ideas to the market to his staff's expertise in SolidWorks, which underpins nearly every stage of Lava Design's workflow.

"We use SolidWorks throughout our whole development process, because it's very versatile.  SolidWorks has all the core functions we need from start to finish.  There's really not much need for any other product design software in our organization," he says.

SolidWorks"We use SolidWorks for laying out initial concepts, generating complex surfaces, and engineering/ optimizing the parts for the chosen manufacturing process.  We use the PhotoWorks module for renderings, which fulfills our clients' marketing needs.  We use eDrawings to collaborate more effectively with our clients.  If our customers need 2D documentation in their product development process, SolidWorks generates those drawings as well.  The ease of use and comprehensive tools & functions make SolidWorks a key partner in our success."

Lava Design's strong emphasis on advanced software capabilities corresponds with an equal emphasis on skills.  The team relies heavily on their regional provider of SolidWorks, Symmetry Solutions, to not only keep them up on the latest functions of the 3D platform, but also to further leverage the system to achieve higher levels of quality.

"There's of course the standard SolidWorks instructional classes, but Symmetry Solutions also offers regularly scheduled classes in advanced surfacing or assembly among a number of other pertinent functions," says Pilosi.  "Symmetry Solutions also offers "Lunch & Learn" seminars, which offers users a great opportunity to enhance their knowledge about how to better utilize SolidWorks and its functionality in their day-to-day work."

Pilosi says he first encountered Symmetry Solutions at his last position.  At the time, Pilosi persuaded his decision makers to switch from their incumbent Pro/Engineer design software over to SolidWorks.  "I explained that they needed to invest in something both engineers and designers could use," Pilosi recalls.  "Pro/E was too complicated.  No one wanted to learn it.  SolidWorks fit our needs in a much better way."

When he came on board with Lava Design, Pilosi was please to find out SolidWorks was their CAD software of choice and Symmetry Solutions was the SolidWorks provider for Lava Design.  Given Pilosi's previous experience with SolidWorks and his relationship with Symmetry Solutions, the transition was seamless.

"The big advantage that sold me on Symmetry Solutions is that they only handle SolidWorks.  I had experience with another reseller, who dealt with several different product design programs.  I like Symmetry Solutions because they focus exclusively on SolidWorks.  Therefore, they have the expertise and support to tackle any problem," Pilosi says.  "Their technical support people and instructors are top notch.   They have a very deep knowledge of the technical material.  They know their stuff."

The designer's relationship with Symmetry Solutions has lasted ten years so far, and much of the support staff has remained constant - people are not only experts, but familiar with Pilosi's situation.

"Working with Symmetry Solutions has been a very pleasant and consistent experience.  Jim Zink has been at Symmetry Solutions since I began working with them and has always been there for me when I have questions & always has the right answer.  Tim Newton has also been a great resource to me.  They're always there for technical help, which is most important to us.  Even the vice president of sales, Paul Rudin, who I've had a long standing relationship with, always makes himself available to me."

In its efforts to create innovative products as well as fast results, Lava Design has focused on two major ingredients:  the right tools and the right people.

So far, Pilosi says, it has paid off.  "The software and support we've received with SolidWorks and Symmetry Solutions have been a big part of our success."

Hardware Corner
Bigger is NOT Always Better!

When configuring a system for SolidWorks, engineers are often tempted to pick the most expensive options in order to achieve the best performance.  This can result in an overpriced system that fails to deliver the anticipated top-level performance.

Nowhere is this more true than in the selection of a graphics card.  Ultra high-end "professional" graphics cards with more than 512MB video memory actually reduce the amount of memory that is available for SolidWorks and can have a serious negative impact on performance with large assemblies - especially when running on 32-bit systems.

For most SolidWorks users, the nVidia Quadro FX 1700 is the optimal choice for price/peformance.  It delivers outstanding performance for about $500.  Customers on a budget will be well-served by the nVidia Quadro FX 570.  It offers excellent performance for small-medium sized assemblies and sells for under $200.  Customers working with VERY large assemblies - especially on Windows Vista - may want to opt for the nVidia Quadro 3700, which sells for about $900.

Similarly, customers often believe that a dual processor Xeon-based system will offer better performance than a single processor Core2-based system.  In reality, the fully-buffered memory used on the more expensive Xeon-based systems introduces latency which results in lower performance than a Core2-based system with a processor running at the same clock speed -- even when the Xeon-based systems have a "faster" Front Side Bus.

Customer Portal Login - Register Your Product!
If after you've created your Customer Portal login account you still see padlocks on many of the items, chances are you haven't registered your product.  This is the final step in creating your Customer Portal account and one that many people miss.  If you try to register your product and still see the padlocks, please call Jim Zink at 763 560-8600 x219 and we'll get your account straightened out.

Issues with Dual Monitors under Windows Vista
Several customers have reported problems with "flickering" when running dual monitors under Windows Vista on nVidia Quadro graphics cards.  The issue is not specifically SolidWorks related, it occurs with all applications.  The solution is to upgrade to version 169.61 drivers directly from the nVidia website.  These drivers are not officially certified for SolidWorks, but they correct the flicker problem and work fine.
