I love connections.

Art travels: it moves across the world, evolving, adapting, morphing and then returning to it's birthplace both the same and different.  This excites me!

Art confirms that nothing is static; the journey shapes the artist as much as the audience, and the ROAD is the reward.

With that said: Breakdancing is becoming popular in Uganda!

The film Bouncing Cats, opening in Hong Kong March 11, explores Ugandan youth's relationship with breakdancing and b-boy culture.

It includes narration by hip-hip stars Common, Mos Def, Will.I.am., dance by original Rock Steady Crew member Crazy Legs, and the fresh music of Somalian rapper K'Naan.

The film should be available on Netflix soon.

Please spread the word about this exciting picture!

Bale Folklorica de Bahia

For any Brazilian music lover in California, Bale Folklorica da Bahia show on Sunday, March 6 is NOT TO BE MISSED!

Here's the "Official" Blurb:

This sizzling 38-member troupe of dancers, musicians, and singers-the most popular folk dance company in Brazil-performs a mix of choreography from African and South American traditions, including slave dances, capoeira, samba, and dances celebrating Carnival. The energy and spirit they bring to the stage leaves audiences celebrating in the aisles.

"Exuberant, indefatigable, and virtuosic" (The New York Times).

My "Unofficial" Blurb:

I remember their show from about 6 years ago: Over the course of  nearly two hours, Bale Folklorico turned on and tapped into the crowd's energy in such a profound way that they simply refused to stop.  Well beyond their "ending" salvo, they just kept playing.  They proceeded to march off the stage, through the audience, exited the auditorium with virtually the entire audience following them, and continued to jam down the street!!!

The ushers didn't know what to do.  Even the troupe members had no idea what was next.  Ultimately, 20 minutes later someone somehow ended the "show" and we all cheered like schoolkids.

AWESOME!

See you there!

THE BOOM!

FITNESS PARTY

IS BACK!

THURSDAY NIGHT FITNESS

Having Fun, Getting Fit
with BOOM!

The words "FITNESS" and "PARTY" aren't usually linked but they should be.

After 6 years teaching fitness classes to over 2,000 people in over 20 workout centers, I've reached the following conclusions:

1)  Laughing is healthy
2)  People get a better workout when they are AT EASE and ENJOYING themselves
3)  People need the "group" aspect of working out, they don't want to do it alone
4)  People have natural rhythm and tapping into it FEELS GREAT!

Q: When is Mozambique NOT African?

A: When it describes a collection of dynamite rhythms from CUBA!

Big thanks goes out to talented percussionist and educator Kim Atkinson who turned me on to the Mozambique beats of Cuba's fine percussionist Pello el Afrocan years ago.  Kim is an excellent teacher and has an amazing series of
World Percussion CDs and DVDs which are both educational and entertaining.

Pello told Kim to bring his Mozambique rhythms "to the world".  Kim taught me and now I'm trying to make Pello's dream come true.

JOIN ME for a dynamic session of Afro-Cuban party beats!
