Can YOUR Moko Jumbie Fit in a Stocking?
Total Rhythm News
11/28/07
Hello Friends:

Happy Holidays.  Let me wish you and your loved ones a blessed, happy and healthy holiday season.  In this issue, you'll learn about Moko Jumbies, we'll talk about stocking stuffers, and you can answer the title question yourself!

I'm including a lot of GIFT IDEAS, ranging in price from $10 to $525, for the drummers in your life (including you!).   All the CDs and DVDs are self-produced.  All the instruments that I sell (pandieros, caxixis, djembes) are made of 100% natural materials; hand-crafted by local folks in either Brazil or Ghana.  They are top-quaility products and, of equal importance, I can guarantee that the money spent is going into the pockets of the artists who create.  This makes me feel good and I believe the patience and care shown in producing the instruments comes out in their sound.  They are awesome!

Also, I've finalized my teaching schedule for Winter, 2008 Percussion Classes in Oakland!
For those of you who inquired (late) about Fall, 2007 classes, this is your chance to pick the class you want for next quarter!

I also have info. about our exciting trip to Trinidad in Summer, 2008, as well as a community benefit for my friend and African Dance teacher Kim Agnew, who injured her knee earlier this year.

As always, give me a call if you have any comments or questions: 510-482-8005, or email me at Robert@TotalRhythm.com.

Rhythm Adventure To Trinidad

Summer, 2008: Moko Jumbies and More

Moko Jumbies

I am so excited to invite you to join me for a Rhythm Adventure to Trinidad in Summer, 2008!!!  We'll be studying folkloric drums, dance and percussion with my good friend Wilfred Mark. (For those of you in the Bay Area, CA, you will know Wilfred as the guy who ALWAYS has a smile on his face.) Wilfred is a native of Trinidad, was a principal dancer with Repertory Dance Theatre of Trinidad and Tobago for eleven years, and a dancer/actor with the Derek Walcott Theatre Company for four years. Wilfred has taught on the faculties of San Francisco State, Sonoma State, and Stanford Universities.

Save the Dates:  We are travelling to Trinidad from Saturday, July 19 - 27, 2008.  Details will follow re: Cost, Itinerary, Workshop Curriculum, etc...

One thing I know we'll learn about are "Moko Jumbies", traditional stilt dancers from Trinidad.
Originally brought from West Africa, Moko Jumbies recall images of tall robed figures moving through the dark African night, to strike terror into the hearts of those who did wrong. The word "Moko" is derived from the name of a West African God and "jumbie" or "ghost" was added by liberated slaves after Emancipation. On stilts that ranged between 10 to 15 feet high (often brightly painted in stripes) the Mokos wear long full skirts or pants and brightly coloured satin or velvet jackets or shirts.

The Moko Jumbie (sometimes accompanied by a dwarf in similar costume) dances through the streets all day, collecting money from spectators gathered at second floor windows or on balconies. He or she dances to the accompaniment of drums, percussion, and other Carnival instruments.

I remember the first time I saw Moko Jumbies.  It was Trinidad Carnival, 1994, there were about 10 altogether, dancing way up high, with long colorful outfits.  They seemed to move in slow motions because their steps were so long.  They were mesmerizing!  I've always wanted to try it - maybe this trip!  Maybe with you?

Winter 2008 School of World Percussion Schedule

Classes Start Jan. 21-22, 2008 in Oakland, CA

Robert Smiling

I teach by the quarter.  My Winter, 2008 classes are set!  Here are all the details: times, location, prices, etc: Drumming Class Schedule

All classes are taught, by me, in my studio in Oakland, CA.  If you do not live in the area, I also offer workshops throughout the US, including Seattle, Los Angeles, Portland, Pittsburgh, PA, with more locations added each year.  Call me and we can arrange some sessions: 510-482-8005.  All I need is airfare, an enthusiasic group of students, and an open space!  Let's make it happen.

For Nor. Cal students:  I teach three levels of hand percussion:  "Level 1: Yes, I Have Rhythm" is for people who have never touched a drum or who consider themselves "rhythmically challenged".  We use tall, standing drums and work with basic syncopation, handclapping, singing....all designed to bring you back to the beat. All drums provided. Drumming Class Schedule

"Level 2: 10 Rhythms" is designed for people with some drumming, musical or dance experience. You love the beat, and this class will teach you the 10 Most Popular World Rhythms, including salsa, samba, hiphop, bellydance, calypso. more.  Comes with a full-length DVD covering all 10 rhythms.  All drums provided.  Drumming Class Schedule

In "Level 3: Ensemble", you'll put it all together!  Using the 10 Most Popular World Rhythms as your base, you'll learn complimentary and supporting rhythms and percussion and gain the ability to lead a percussion ensemble of your own!  All drums and percussion instruments provided.
Drumming Class Schedule

Let me know which class appeals to you, or call me if you're not sure which is the best fit.  510-482-8005.  It's better to let me help you pick the right class than enroll in the wrong one.

I am committed to your success.  If you want to learn world rhythms, I will help you realize that dream.
