My Fall, 2007, School of World Percussion classes started last week and I am truly blessed to have such a wonderful group of new (and returning) students.  The 10 Rhythms and Percussion Ensemble Classes are full but I still have room in the Level 1: Yes, I Have Rhythm class. It's not too late to join!  Here is the info:   Adult Drumming Classes
If you can't take a class but want to learn rhythms, get the 10 Rhythms DVD.

In addition, I have THREE exciting Rhythm Events happening this month: Yoga/Rhythm Flow, Pandreiro Party and Caxixi Workshop, so please join me as we CONNECT WITH THE BEAT!

  Percussive Pandeiro Party!

"The Largest Gathering of Pandeiro Players Outside of Brazil"

This is a free party to celebrate the release of my 2-Volume Pandeiro Instructional DVD.  I am so pleased to offer this to the community:  It's the first and only full-length instructional Pandeiro DVD in English, with comprehensive instruction on how to hold the pandeiro, stretching, creating proper notes, musical fundamentals and LOTS OF RHYTHMS broken down and played VERY SLOWLY so you can really learn them: Samba, Baiao, Partido Alto, Capoeira, 3/2 Clave, Funk, more!

When I learned pandeiro many years ago, it was a real struggle!  I had no instructional guides and no teachers!  I learned in Brazil and it was very tough to catch the rhythms because they were played so fast.

I created this DVD set so you would have an easier time learning and enjoying this great instrument!

SKA CUBANO:  "Aye Caramba"

In a word, this album is a party.  It just rocks, from start to finish: cumbias, ska, salsa, afro-cuban rumba, calypso...mixed into a totally danceable, up-tempo, "life is good" style.

Feijoada  Pronounce it,
Eat it!

feijoada photo
First the pronounciation.
Say "fay", then say "jwah", then say "da".  Now put them together and emphasize the second syllable: "FayJWAHda".   Say it faster with a little attitude.  Now move your hands and add some facial expression when you say: "FayJWAAHdah."  You got it!

What the heck is it?
introduced in Brazil by black slaves as early as the sixteenth century, feijoada is a wonderfully seasoned bean, rice, and meat potpourri type dish -- roughly the Brazilian equivalent of our American Soul Food. It is without a doubt the country's national dish. It is so popular throughout Brazil that most restaurants, from the humblest inner-city
"lanchonete" to the sophisticated hotels lining the shores of Rio, designate specific days in which "feijoada" is served at lunch time as "o prato do dia" -- the day's special. Other eateries pride themselves in the fact that they serve it every day and advertise it in the yellow pages and/or in conspicuous blackboards outside their premises.

Since "feijoada" is in general a particularly heavy dish, it is only served at noon. The recommended post-feijoada activity is a nap! Because of the high fat content in the true feijoada, some Brazilians believe that it must be watered-down with a "caipirinha"," a mixture of lime juice, sugar and "cachaca" or "pinga," a strong liquor derived from sugar cane (often better than 100% proof!!!).

Feijoada is also an important part of the music scene in Brazil.  Music, language, laughter and good food are necessary ingredients for a samba jam.

Where can you get it?
Good news!:  You can enjoy incredible feijoada right here in the Bay Area at Canto do Brasil, a beautiful little restaurant at 41 Franklin Street in SF.  Phone: 415-626-8727.  Canto do Brasil serves feijoada every night they're open along with other Brazilian favorites such as moquequa, in a very cozy place with a friendly and fun vibe.
Enjoy the feijoada, and, now you'll be able to pronounce it!

SAMBA in the EAST BAY

One of the best Bay Area Brazilian bands is doing a rare East Bay show!

Nobody From Ipanema blend samba with funk and Brazilian pop for a groovy, highly percussive sound.  They've been playing together for over seven years and it shows: they know their music and love sharing the warmth of the Brazilian sound.  Highly recommended.
