Yucca Loma Project Update from the Town of Apple Valley
Spring Valley Lake residents may contact the San Bernardino County Public Works Department directly for up to the minute information on project status. Mrs. Carrie Schindler, PE, Chief of Transportation Planning Management, is the contact person for the County segment of the Project, and may be reached during normal business hours at (909) 387-8166.
Here is a quick update: The Yucca Loma Corridor Project has advanced into the Final Design, Right-of-Way Acquisition, and Construction Phase. During February we completed the first element of construction for the new Yucca Loma Bridge structure by clearing trees and large vegetation from the proposed alignment across the Mojave River. This work was completed well in advance of the actual bridge construction due to the presence of sensitive habitat in the river bottom. The work was completed before March 1, which is the official start of the spring and summer nesting season.
With the recent approval of the Environmental Document, and Town Council approval of the overall project, Dokken Engineering is working to complete Final Design details for Yucca Loma Road, the Yucca Loma Bridge, and Yates Road, and we anticipate packaging up logical sequences of construction activity for advertisement and award later this summer. The first activities will include the bridge structure itself as it will have an 18-24 month construction period. During that same time Apple Valley will be awarding other construction elements along Yucca Loma Road including a major storm drain extension, water and sewer line modifications, traffic signal installation, sound walls, and the construction of curb, gutter, sidewalk, and street improvements. Please contact Mrs. Schindler at San Bernardino County Public Works Department for updated schedules for work along Yates Road, but I would anticipate sound wall and street improvements to begin along Yates Road during the same period.
Apple Valley is working with San Bernardino County Officials to finalize details pertaining to right-of-way design, acquisition, and capital allocation for the completion of permanent right-of-way across the County owned portion of the Mojave River bottom, and along the north side of Yates Road. Once the Construction Phase gets underway along Yates Road, and along the Green Tree Blvd. segments, the San Bernardino County Public Works Department, and the City of Victorville Engineering Division, will likely be handling the construction scheduling and project administration for their respective portions of the project.
