Purpose: Learning more about the underlying causes of obesity can inform and shape effective population-based health and wellness programs.The Aetna Foundation wants to understand the contributors to obesity, particularly among minority populations, and what supports and sustains better choices that can stave off overeating and reduce inactivity.Grant-making in this area focuses on initiatives that create a better understanding of the root causes of the obesity epidemic. Examples of grants we would support include projects and/or studies that identify causes of obesity and potential best practices for addressing obesity, such as: Domestic food policies and their impact on individual food choices The impact of our neighborhoods and the “built environment” on promoting population health and weight loss Assessments of why communities with high rates of food insecurity also are more likely to experience high rates of obesity How children use recreation time How school lunch and food policies impact our children

Program:   Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)

Purpose: The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Enacted by Congress in 1983, this program authorizes the President to bestow up to 108 awards each year. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Awards are given to mathematics and science teachers from each of the 50 states and four U.S. jurisdictions. The jurisdictions are Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; Department of Defense Schools; and the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). The teachers are recognized for their contributions to teaching and learning and their ability to help students make progress in mathematics and science. In addition to honoring individual achievement, the goal of the award program is to exemplify the highest standards of mathematics and science teaching. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.

Purpose: Amgen encourages excellence in science education by recognizing and honoring extraordinary K-12 science teachers with the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. Since the program’s 1992 inception, Amgen has awarded over $2.5 million to educators who make outstanding contributions to science teaching and a measurable impact on students’ lives. The 34 selected winners will receive an unrestricted cash award of $5,000, with the recipient’s school receiving an additional $5,000 in the form of a restricted grant to be used for the expansion or enhancement of science programs, science resources, or professional development of science teachers.

The Sodexo Foundation works to ensure that every child in the U.S., especially those most at risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life. Purpose: The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive. The Award focuses on performance in six key areas: Product and service outcomes Customer-focused outcomes Financial and market outcomes Workforce-focused outcomes Process effectiveness outcomes Leadership outcomes Organizations do not receive the Award for specific products or services. To be selected as an Award recipient, an organization must have a system that ensures continuous improvement in overall performance in delivering products and/or services provides an approach for satisfying and responding to customers and stakeholders Up to 8 Awards are given annually across six eligibility categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care, and nonprofit. Award recipients that are nominated for a subsequent Award are not included in the total cap of 18.

Purpose: The Christopher Columbus Awards is a national, community-based science and technology program for middle school students. The program challenges the students to work in teams of three to four, with an adult coach, to identify a problem in their community and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution to that problem. Eight finalist teams and their coaches will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Walt Disney World� to attend National Championship Week and compete for valuable U.S. Savings Bonds and the $25,000 Columbus Foundation Community Grant, plus a $200 development grant to further refine their idea.
