RNO ranks 2nd Most Efficient Airport in North America
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RTIA) has been named the second most efficient airport in the United States and Canada by the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS).
For the third time in six years, Reno-Tahoe International has received the distinction of being in the top five list of most efficient airports, outranking larger west coast airports such as Sacramento, Oakland, Orange County and Portland. The most recent ranking is for the year 2010, for American and Canadian airports with less than 15 million passengers. RTIA received the honor due to the structure of its revenue streams; with 70 percent of operating revenues derived from non-airline sources.
This financial set-up helps keep landing fees low while allowing the airport to be less dependent upon the airlines for revenue during these challenging times for the airline industry.
"This award helps demonstrate to our community that Reno-Tahoe International is one of the finest run airports in the nation," said John Wagnon, Chair of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board of Trustees. "It is a tribute to the dedication of the staff and Board to financially operate an airport that can be a model for other communities across the continent."
Other airports in the top five include Raleigh-Durham, Nashville, Calgary and Richmond. The ATRS is a Canadian-based academic research organization that analyzes and ranks airports worldwide. RTIA was ranked fifth most efficient in 2006 and in 2008 by the ATRS. |
Million Air FBO Opens Doors at RNO
There are a "million" reasons to be excited about general aviation development on the east side of the airport.
The new Million Air FBO has opened its temporary facility along Rock Boulevard pending completion of a $20 million FBO complex at the corner of Rock Blvd. and Mill Street. An FBO offers services such as fueling, maintenance and storage to aircraft customers.
Million Air has 30 locations in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. It will use its international network to help bring flights through its Reno facility while construction is underway to build a brand new $10 million facility by 2013 that will reflect the level of service and amenities that Million Air customers are accustomed to. The second phase of the Million Air development will add another $10 million in investment by 2017.
The project will add another $2.2 million in local tax revenue to our region over the next five years.
"Million Air is about more than dollars," Krys Bart, President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe International Airport said. "They treat every customer, whether they are in a single engine propeller plane or a corporate jet, like a star. They will add to the airport's reputation for outstanding service." |

What's Fair in Air Fare?
It's common for people to tell airport officials that Reno's air fares are too high. But the latest statistics prove otherwise.

Out of the top 100 commercial airports in the United States, 79 had a higher average air fare than Reno-Tahoe International in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The national average air fare was $337 and Reno ranked 80th with an average fare of $294, that's 12.6 percent below the national average. Sacramento ranked 62 with an average fare of $315 that was 7.2 percent higher than RNO.
What airport had the most expensive fares? Newark, New Jersey with an average fare of $461. |
