Ticket to air service success in the hands
of the community

If you want to see more air service at Reno-Tahoe International-get on board.

Community support is the ticket to maintaining and adding new flights at RNO. While it can sometimes take more than five years to convince an airline to add a new flight, the flight can disappear after only a few months if the community does not fill the seats.

And community support is exactly what RNO needs to keep its daily non-stop service to Minneapolis, MN on Delta Air Lines beginning July 1, 2011.

The new flight marks the second time in four months that Reno-Tahoe International has announced non-stop daily service to a major hub airport. In February, Reno-Tahoe International celebrated the opening of non-stop daily service to Houston on Continental Airlines.

The Minneapolis flight will provide outstanding connections to the Midwest and East coast as well as international destinations such as Amsterdam, London and eight cities in Canada.

"You can take a stand for our community by taking a seat on this flight," Krys Bart, President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe International Airport said. "There are 450 commercial airports around the country that want this flight and the only way we can keep it in Reno is to fill the seats."

If the flight isn't doing well after three months, Delta may move the flight to another community that will support the service.

"A full size commercial jet costs more than $130 million," Bart said. "If the airline is willing to make that kind of investment in our region, we need to demonstrate community support by filling the flight."

Delta Air Lines will fly the route with a Boeing 737-800 with 160 seats. It will depart Reno at 12:55 p.m. and arrive in Minneapolis at 6:10 p.m.  It will depart Minneapolis at 11:30 a.m. and arrive in Reno at 1:05 p.m.

Cell Phone Waiting Lot Moves to new location on National Guard Wy Cell Phone Waiting Lot Moves

Remember: The Cell Phone Waiting Lot is moving to it's new location on Wednesday, May 18.

The new Cell Phone Waiting Lot is near the corner of Terminal Way and National Guard Way.

Motorists will be directed via signage and maps to the new lot.

The Cell Phone Waiting Lot was created as a customer convenience during the Airport Baggage Check-in project (ABC), and because it was so well received by the public, the Airport Authority will continue to provide the lot, but in a different location.

Greetings!

Yes, we've all done it. We take our seat on the aircraft and hope by pure luck that no one takes the seat next to us. As the line of people stuffing the carry-ons into the bins thins out, we can't believe our luck. We think it's a luxury to have the elbow room provided by an open seat.

But your good fortune represents misfortune for the airport, the airlines and even the community. Empty seats mean lost revenue. If the community does not support air service by filling seats on aircraft, the airline will find another city that will. At a time when our economy needs every visitor it can get, we need to fill those seats to maintain our great air service.

So next time you board an aircraft, have a safe and enjoyable flight, and remember that the more seats that are filled, the more jobs, revenue and air service for our community.

Sincerely,

March cargo and passenger numbers stay on the rise

Cargo and passenger numbers were up in the month of March at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Cargo showed an impressive 19.3 percent jump over March of last year. In fact, cargo numbers were so strong, that it was the second largest March on record with more than 10.5 million pounds of cargo handled.

The consistent increase in cargo numbers highlights the fact that Reno-Tahoe International is a regional airport that plays a vital role as a catalyst for the economy in Northern Nevada and parts of California. In addition to drawing passengers from a large geographic area, RNO provides an importantboost to economic development throughout the region due to its cargo capabilities.

This March also marked the 10th consecutive month that passenger statistics have increased month over month.

Total passengers in the first quarter of this year increased 1.3 percent over the first quarter of 2010. March 2011 saw a 0.05 increase in passengers over March of last year. Spring Break, an excellent snow pack and the United States Bowling Congress have helped keep passenger numbers high at RNO.

"We have seen a strong first quarter for both cargo and passengers and we hope to keep that momentum going into the spring," Krys Bart, President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe International Airport, said.  "The community can help boost these numbers, and the local economy, by continuing to fill aircraft seats."

Reno-Tahoe offers 68 non-stop departure flights per day with 7,928 seats to 16 destinations.
