Airport donates 1,400 meals to charity; Disaster Drill coming in May

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport recently made a donation of 1,400 meals to the St. Vincent's Food Pantry. These high-calorie dinners will go a long way in helping to feed the less fortunate in our community.

 Triennial Disaster Drill

The airport keeps ready-to-eat meals in storage in case of an emergency. The food has a shelf life, and so the airport donated the dinners while still fresh and then will order a new supply. The stored meals are just one small part of an overall disaster plan in place at the airport.

Safety and security are the top priorities at Reno-Tahoe International, which is why the airport continually trains for all types of emergencies. From floods and earthquakes, to security threats or aircraft incidents, it is important that the airport be prepared for any type if disaster.

In May, the airport will hold its triennial full-scale disaster drill as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It simulates the crash of a commercial jet. The event will be staged on airport property and will include responders from virtually every emergency services jurisdiction in Washoe County.

The scenario will also include over 100 actors playing the roles of victims with simulated injuries who are in various levels of medical distress. This important training will allow participants to practice emergency response.

Passenger and cargo stats up for February

Passenger and cargo numbers continue to climb at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

For the ninth consecutive month, passenger numbers have increased month over month. In February 2011, the airport experienced a 1.5 percent increase in passengers when compared to the same month in 2010.

Terrific snow conditions and new non-stop daily service on Continental Airlines to Houston helped bring 299,090 passengers through RTIA in February.

"It is wonderful to see the community filling the airline seats we work so hard to add to our market," said Krys Bart, President and CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority. "More seats mean more people and economic benefit to the region."

In addition to passenger increases, the airport has also experienced 13 consecutive months of cargo growth. In February 2011, Reno-Tahoe International handled 8,674,321 lbs, 12.9 percent more cargo than it did in February, 2010.

Reno-Tahoe currently offers 68 non-stop departure flights per day with 7,928 seats to 16 destinations.

RNO adds new

Reno-Tahoe International Airport is proud to announce that daily non-stop service to Minneapolis, MN on Delta Air Lines, beginning July 1, 2011.

"Minneapolis is a great addition to our list of hub airports and provides terrific connections across the country and across the world," Krys Bart, AAE, President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe International Airport said. "We appreciate Delta Air Lines bringing Minneapolis back to our community."

Non-stop service to the Twin Cities was previously offered on Northwest Airlines but left Reno-Tahoe in early 2006. For five years, the staff at Reno-Tahoe has worked diligently to bring the popular service back to the region.

The new flight marks the second time in two months that Reno-Tahoe International has announced non-stop daily service to a major hub airport. Service to Houston, Texas began on Continental Airlines February 17.

Delta Air Lines will fly the route with a Boeing 737-800 with 160 seats. It will depart Reno at 12:55 p.m. and arrive in Minneapolis at 6:10 p.m.  It will depart Minneapolis at 11:30 a.m. and arrive in Reno at 1:05 p.m.

Cell Phone Waiting Lot Moves

The airport's popular cell phone waiting lot is moving to a new location next month.

On May 18, the existing lot south of the terminal will be replaced by a new, larger cell phone lot at the corner of Terminal Way and National Guard Way. Motorists will be directed via signage and maps to the new lot.

The current Cell Lot was at a temporary location to help customers through the construction of the Airport Baggage Check-in Project. Now that the project is complete, and passenger counts are on the rise, the existing lot cannot accommodate the number of vehicles waiting for arriving guests during peak travel periods.

During the coming weeks, watch for signage, maps, and detailed information to help alert the public about the location of the new lot.
