TSA RNO earns national awards

The best Transportation Security Administration (TSA) team in the nation is right here in Reno.

The TSA staff at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport has received the highest honor from Washington D.C. headquarters - Airport of the Year Award.

The local TSA was selected as Airport of the Year for their high level of safety, security and customer service offered to all passengers at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. In addition, Susan Clark, the Federal Security Director (FSD) responsible for leading the local TSA, has received the high distinction of FSD of the Year.Krys Bart and Susan Clark

"We couldn't agree more with Washington's decision to recognize the local TSA management and staff in this way," said Krys Bart, Airport Authority President and CEO. "At Reno-Tahoe International Airport, we like to say that we are responsible for making that all important first and last impression on customers traveling to and from the region, and I can honestly say that TSA has carried that same motto in their work here at RNO."

The TSA currently employs 220 people in Northern Nevada who are responsible for screening of passengers at the Security Checkpoints and their checked baggage in the Ticket Lobby. An independent review of all nominations received, unanimously agreed that the TSA Team RNO provides an outstanding level of service. And recent customer satisfaction surveys conducted at RNO confirm passenger satisfaction with the local TSA team.

"At Reno-Tahoe International, the Transportation Security Administration works in true partnership with the Airport Authority and the Airlines," said Federal Security Director Susan Clark. "And I see this award as recognition of this team effort and believe it reflects positively on all of us, from the airport, airlines, and the TSA."

This is the first time that the same airport has received both the "Airport of the Year" and the "FSD of the Year" award, which really speaks highly of the leadership and team we are fortunate to have at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

New cargo carrier boosts Airport and region

Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is proud to announce the addition of a new cargo carrier, Capital Cargo International. Capital Cargo is a division of BAX Global/DB Schenker, one of the largest freight forwarders in the world.

Capital began service at RNO on November 1 and increases the airport's carrying capacity just in time for the holiday season. It also enables the airport to expand its reach by breaking into the non-integrated market.

The airport's three existing carriers, FedEx, UPS and DHL, operate as integrated carriers, which means they're responsible for every step of delivery from one door to the next. But Capital Cargo International, as a non-integrated operator, deals only with air transport, which brings greater international opportunity.

The new carrier's presence will help expand the airport's international reach,  because Capital Cargo International's transport capabilities extend to every continent but Antarctica.

"The addition of Capital Cargo couldn't come at a better time," said Krys Bart, Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority President and CEO. "In December, during the holiday cargo peak, the airport's cargo carriers typically increase their capacity by about 200 percent. Capital Cargo will add even more options and capacity," said Bart.

Capital Cargo is operating a Boeing 727 five days per week.  And service on a DC-8 is scheduled to start operating on Saturdays only in the near future.

The flights operate between Reno, Denver and Toledo, which is BAX Global's U.S. hub.  This will allow connectivity to anywhere in the world including Hong Kong and the Middle East.

The cargo operations are expected to generate approximately $1,700 per week in landing fees initially. But that number will increase when the flights eventually switch from Boeing 727s to all DC-8s.

"This ultimately translates to lower costs for the customer, said Krys Bart. "The more cargo aircraft we land here at the airport, the lower the overall cost is for the airlines, which helps retain more passenger seats in our market."

Holiday travel tips:
  • Reno-Tahoe International Airport does not currently have body scanners at the Security Checkpoints.
  • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does conduct an in-depth pat-down procedure when necessary.
  • At the Security Checkpoint, empty your pockets, remove your shoes and jewelry, and place them in the bins provided. Remember to retrieve all your items once through screening.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, for screening purposes women are encouraged to wear pants. Be prepared to remove coats, jackets and all outer wear; place them in the bin for screening.
  • Do not wrap gifts; wait to wrap presents at your destination in case they must be inspected by security.
  • But be sure to remember the TSA 3-1-1 rule for carry-on bags at www.tsa.gov. Liquids, gels and aerosols such as shampoo, lotion and perfume must be packed in a one quart plastic baggie; one baggie per customer.

Above all, pack your patience. And thank you for flying.
