New display makes travel "bearable"

While Reno may be known for its nightlife, it's the wildlife that is capturing people's attention on Concourse B at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

NV Black Bear

Members of the Safari Club Int
ernational Convention and local citizens gathered Jan. 21 to dedicate a display of a mounted 400-pound Black Bear. When alive, the bear had been killing large livestock in a residential area and was put down due to safety concerns.

With the help of private citizens and the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the mounted bear was donated to the airport and is on display adjacent to the security checkpoint.

During the dedication ceremony, an elder of the Northern Nevada Paiute tribe and employee of the the Airport Authority, Aaron Wolfe-Payton, provided a native American dedication. T
he event was timed to coincide with the Safari Club International, a hunting convention that brings 15,000 attendees to Reno each year from around the world.

The bear was christened with the name Wu Daa-a (pronounced woo-dah-ah) which is the Pai
ute word for bear.

"This bear display celebrates another aspect of our Nevada culture while reminding visitors that in addition to our famous nightlife, we are the proud home of impressive wildlife as well," said Krys Bart, President/CEO.  "It sends the message that in addition to gaming, we have Big Game here at the Gateway to Lake Tahoe."
ABC construction project making its departure

Travelers will experience the sights and sounds of construction at Reno-Tahoe International Airport as the temporary lobby is removed from the front of the terminal. The removal of the temporary lobby is one of the final steps of the Airport Baggage Check-in project (ABC).

temporary structure

Beginning this week, the temporary Ticket Lobby will come down, requiring the short-term closure of doorways one by one, north to south, as construction crews peel off the outer layer of the building and remove the framework.

Passengers will still be able to enter the new Ticket Lobby through either the main double doors or by walking through the temporary structure, but are advised to watch for construction areas and directional signage.

The final phase of the project will involve the re-construction and re-opening of the roadway in front of the terminal building.
Web Tip: Flight Finder is a helpful online tool

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport's new website allows passengers to find a flight to anywhere in the world with just the click of a button.

From the airport homepage, www.renoairport.com, click on "Find Flight" and an interactive map will search for all available routes to your destination.

Cargo makes dollars and sense

The month of December 2009 was a record month for cargo carriers at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. A total of 13.1 million pounds was carried through the region on UPS, FedEx and DHL.

Cargo aircraft

And while December is always the busiest month of the year for cargo, this past December saw a 3.43% increase over December 2008 and is the second highest cargo tonnage reported on record at RTIA. This peak in cargo is a clear demonstration of the diversified economy in Northern Nevada that is home to businesses such as Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and various other warehouse and distribution centers.

Another impressive cargo fact is that typically, the UPS nationwide network ranks the Reno-Tahoe area as 29th busiest, but each December RTIA jumps to #7 in the UPS network.

1960 Olympics gave lift to RTIA

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympic Winter Games, Reno-Tahoe International Airport has partnered with Squaw Valley USA to open an Olympic History Museum. This exhibit also celebrates the efforts of the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games 2022 Coalition and the upcoming XXI Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.

Olympic Museum

The 1960's
were exciting times for the then Reno Municipal Airport.  Due to new technology, and a new terminal building built just for the 1960 Olympics, the airport was quickly becoming a place that connected Reno to the world.

The Museum features flags from all countries represented at the 1960 Olympics, photos, magazines, uniforms, the Longine Clock, and much more.  A silver bowl displays the names of the US Ski Team Members and other Local Olympians.  Two television monitors display a video regarding the 1960 Olympics and during February 12th through the 28th will broadcast the XXI Olympic Winter Games from Vancouver, Canada.

The public is invited to attend the official opening of the museum that will include a visit from current and former Olympians, on Monday, February 8 at 2:30 PM at the entrance to Baggage Claim.

The Olympic History Museum will be on exhibit at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport through the end of 2010.
American Airlines adds 3rd flight to Dallas

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is proud to announce a new non-stop flight to Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) on American Airlines.

The new service on a 188-seat Boeing 757 will operate four days per week beginning February 11, 2010. American Airlines currently offers two daily Dallas flights on a 140 seat MD-80. The new flight is on a larger aircraft and will add 188 additional seats between Reno and Dallas, Texas.

"To be able to announce a new flight during these challenging economic times is great news," said Krys Bart, President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe International Airport. "This announcement comes on the heels of nine additional departures recently added during the December 2009 and May 2010 time frame, so it is truly fantastic news for the community."

The new roundtrip flight will depart Dallas/Ft. Worth at 12:15 PM and arrive in Reno-Tahoe at 1:50 PM. It will then depart from RNO at 2:50 PM and arrive in DFW at 7:55 PM.
