Airport Celebrates Olympic History
The Reno-Tahoe International Airport and Squaw Valley USA are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics by creating a Squaw Valley Olympic museum for the upcoming ski season.
The Winter Olympics Display honors the legacy of the Squaw Valley Olympics and its connection to Reno-Tahoe. The airport terminal building was originally built for the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics and the winter sport theme is still prominent in the terminal with the bronze ski statue "airport icon" by artist Douglas Van Howd which acts as a natural gathering place for visitors to the airport.

The Squaw Valley Olympic Museum will be located at the entrance to Baggage Claim and will have an Olympic podium, complete with stands for the gold, medal and silver medal winners. Behind the podium will be the flags of the United States, representing the 1960 games; Canada, representing the 2010 games in Vancouver; and Great Britain, representing the 2012 summer games in London.
Flat-screen monitors in the airport's Olympic display will show television clips from the 1960 games and also have a live feed from the 2010 Vancouver Olympics in February.
Area residents are asked to donate or lend any memorabilia they might have for the airport display which will open in December and remain on exhibit until May 2010.
Please contact Carolyn Wallace Dee, Administration Manager of Squaw Valley USA at 530-452-7119 or at cwallacedee@squaw.com for more information or to donate items.

Southwest adds new flight to Boise
Passengers travelling to Boise, Idaho will have an additional flight option beginning March, 2010. Southwest Airlines is adding a new non-stop daily flight between Reno and Boise, Idaho, bringing the total number of Boise non-stops to three per day.
This latest flight announcement follows several air service increases over the past few months. Last month, Southwest announced new non-stop service to Denver with same plane service to Boston. In addition, Reno-Tahoe added a non-stop daily flight to Phoenix on Southwest, Saturday-only service to Minneapolis on Delta Air Lines, ski season non-stop service to Mammoth Lakes on Horizon Air and now an additional flight to Boise.
"Reno-Tahoe International Airport's relationship with Southwest Airlines is vitally important to our community and this new flight to Boise demonstrates how strongly Southwest views our region," RTAA President/CEO Krys Bart said. "The best way we can thank Southwest for this support and the new flights they have added is to fill the seats on their aircraft."
The addition of this flight will bring the total number of daily Southwest departures to 34 at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

ABC Construction Wizard adds magic for holiday travelers
The Construction Wizard's work is almost complete. The Airport Baggage Check-in (ABC) project is in its final phase and will soon be open to the public. On December 1, the newly remodeled Ticket Lobby will be unveiled during a Grand Opening Celebration for the community. The lobby will be operational beginning December 8. Passengers will soon enjoy the convenience and confidence of knowing their bags are being screened using the latest security technology in the nation. Travelers departing during Thanksgiving will be among the last to check-in from the Temporary Ticket Lobby. Passengers traveling during the December Holiday season and New Years will be the first to enjoy checking-in for departure inside the new Ticket Lobby which features a Reno-Tahoe motif with natural colored stone tiles, rock facades, floating ceiling tiles and flat screen monitors and kiosks. Access to the new check-in area will be available from both the main terminal or through the temporary Ticket Lobby. By March 2010, the tent-like structure that houses the Temporary Ticket Lobby will be removed and the three lanes of the former roadway will re-open. Reno-Tahoe International is building a better way to travel with the new Ticket Lobby and Integrated Bag Belt System that will enhance security and convenience just in time for the holidays. Hyatt Place Hotel open at entrance to airport
The new Hyatt Place Hotel has officially checked in on the corner of Plumb Lane and Terminal Way, at the entrance to the airport.
This all suite, non-gaming, non-smoking hotel offers complimentary Wi-Fi internet access and continental breakfast, and serves premium food and beverage options, including Starbucks Coffee 24 hours a day. It also includes an indoor pool and workout room.

Although the Reno-Tahoe International Airport does not own or operate The Hyatt, the hotel with the world-wide recognized name is built on airport owned land.
This is an example of how the airport's efforts to build a diversified revenue stream are paying off. The hotel lease will help keep the costs low to the airlines. Reno-Tahoe International Airport does not operate using any local tax dollars, and non-airline revenue is crucial for maintaining low fees.

Travel Tips
Whether you're traveling for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas or New Year, the travel tips below can help make your holidays more enjoyable.
Download your boarding pass before coming to the airport. Most airlines will allow online check-in 24 hours prior to departure.Arrive 90 minutes prior to your flight or two hours for international travel. Allow extra travel time in case of inclement weather or busy holiday weekends.Call the airline or check the airline website prior to departure to ensure flight information is correct; and that the flight is on time. For specific flight information, contact the airline.Do not wrap gifts. Wait until you arrive at your destination to wrap presents; it is possible the item may have to be unwrapped during the security screening process.
Be an educated traveler. Know the fees for checking bags and surcharges for holiday travel. Find out from the airline the cost of additional checked bags and overweight/oversized bags, especially if you are traveling with skis or snowboards. If your child is traveling as an unaccompanied minor, make certain that the person dropping off or picking up has photo identification and all necessary contact information for the child. (Please contact your specific airline for their rules and procedures.) Parents should have proof of age for children under two who will be traveling without a ticket and riding on the lap of their parent.
But be sure to remember the TSA 3-1-1 rules for carry-on bags at www.tsa.gov. Passengers are limited to one carry-on bag and one personal item (examples include: purse, briefcase, computer/case, backpack). Pack light, fewer check-in and carry-on items will speed the hand searches at ticket counters, and screening at airport security checkpoints. Most of all, please pack your patience. | |
