Airport to serve as Olympic Portal

Reno-Tahoe International Airport has been selected as an Olympic Portal airport for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Due to the heightened level of security during such an event, aviation officials require that all private aircraft flying into Vancouver during the Olympic Games must first land at a designated portal airport like Reno.

Reno-Tahoe International is one of three United States airports to receive this designation that could bring as many as 40 to 50 additional private aircraft daily to the region. Boise and Spokane are the other U.S. airports that have been selected to serve as Olympic portals.

Canadian officials expect approximately 300 to 500 aircraft per day to fly into British Columbia during the busiest days of the games. The portal system helps air traffic controllers and Canadian security officials coordinate the safe arrival and departure of the aircraft.

Reno was selected as a portal because of its excellent airport infrastructure and landing systems, airport businesses that cater to corporate aircraft and its good winter weather.

"We are honored that our airport has been selected to support the safe operation of air travel during the Vancouver Games," said Krys Bart, President/CEO. "Our airport is historically tied to the Olympic Games dating back to our role as the primary airport for the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics."

Reno-Tahoe International offers three airport businesses (called Fixed Base Operators or FBOs) that are well prepared to accommodate aircraft bound for the Vancouver Olympic Games. Atlantic Aviation, Jet West and Sierra Air Service are all busy FBOs with extensive experience in handling corporate aircraft.

New air service to Boston and beyond

Flying to Reno-Tahoe from the East Coast will be even easier this winter thanks to new flights to Boston, Denver, Minneapolis and more.

Southwest Airlines starts new direct service to Boston, Massachusetts on January 10, 2010. Southwest will fly non-stop daily to Denver, Colorado with a same-plane direct connection to Boston. This flight adds Southwest service to a major hub airport in the west and offers same-plane service to another major hub on the East Coast.

The new Denver service will be the first flight between Reno and the Mile-High City to be offered by Southwest. It will feature a 137-seat Boeing 737.

"New non-stop service to Denver is fantastic news for our community and same-plane service to Boston is something we have worked hard to achieve for several years," Krys Bart, President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe International Airport, said.

Also bringing east coast travelers to Reno-Tahoe this winter, Delta/Northwest will offer seasonal non-stop flights to Minneapolis and Atlanta.

Airport Concessions earns Top Ten award

Reno-Tahoe International ranks number seven out of the top one hundred North American Airports for the amount of revenue generated per departing passenger.

Airport industry data is collected annually on food and beverage, specialty retail, news and gifts, duty-free, advertising and car rental concessions. The 2009 "Airport Revenue News" survey revealed that Reno-Tahoe International ranks in the top ten in terms of revenue per passenger.

What this means is that passengers are spending money on the quality retail and gift items, and tasty food and beverage options available at Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Per passenger, more money is spent than much larger airports such as Orlando, Los Angeles, Sacramento and Chicago.

It is important to note that Reno-Tahoe International does not collect any local tax dollars. All funds generated on the airport are spent running the day to day operations.

So the next time you travel through Reno-Tahoe International Airport, stop in and shop at one of the unique stores or restaurants and find out why our concessionaires rank at the top!
Airport leaders earn RARA Chairman's award

At the September Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board of Trustees Meeting, the Reno Air Race Association (RARA) presented two outstanding leaders at the Airport Authority with the RARA Chairman's Award.

Krys Bart, President/CEO and Skip Polak, Manager of Stead Airport (photo above and below respectively), were awarded the prestigious award in honor of their dedication and service to the National Championship Air Races and the Air Race Association.

In addition to the award, they were each gifted with a bright red Air Race jacket embroidered with their name.

Each September, the Reno-Stead Airport teems with activity as over 200,000 guests, hundreds of aircraft, their pilots, and crews land on the airfield for the National Championship Air Races.

And each year, teams at the Reno-Stead and Reno-Tahoe International Airports, work very hard before, during and after the races to ensure a safe and efficient operation.

In recognition of the Airport Authority's support of the National Championship Air Races, the Reno Air Race Association expressed their gratitude with the Chairman's awards.
"The best way in and out of the Reno-Tahoe region is getting even better."
