ABC is a green project

While orange is the color most associated with construction, the Airport Baggage Check-in project (ABC) is green.

The 22 month construction project to install a highly secure Baggage Handling System behind the Ticket Counter at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport has incorporated a number of environmentally friendly features:

The baggage conveyor system that will move the checked baggage of over 4.5 million passengers per year is 1.3 miles long and approximately 70% of the belt system uses more energy-efficient belts that reduces friction. Because there is less friction, energy consumption is reduced by up to 30% compared with the conventional belt originally specified.
Q&D, the General Contractor for the ABC project, has utilized 100% bio-diesel fueled vehicles since the project started in February of 2008.
Low wattage fluorescent lights and LED exit lights are being installed throughout the Ticketing area and are 40% more efficient than the previous lighting.
The design of the airline ticket offices and Ticket Lobby incorporates wall and ceiling motion sensors for lighting control; control systems for on/off times in the certain zones of the baggage handling area and Ticket Lobby; and time clocks to set on/off times for the airline television monitors are being installed along the ticket counter walls.
And finally, several major components were diverted from the waste stream and recycled by both the Airport Authority and contractors during the demolition of the existing facilities, including: salvage of the majority of the concrete and over 1,000 fluorescent light tubes and ballasts.

When the new security equipment goes online and the remodeled Ticket Lobby re-opens this December, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport will unveil a high-tech, customer friendly facility with the latest technology to ensure safety and security of baggage screening. But in addition, it will have successfully completed a $63 million construction project that is both energy efficient and environmentally sound.

Worldwide aviation company opens center in Reno-Tahoe

Reno-Tahoe International is proud to announce the opening of the Dassault Aviation service center for corporate Falcon jets, located right here in Northern Nevada.  This international aviation corporation opens a division of its worldwide aviation business April 7, at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

The 38,000 square foot factory-owned maintenance facility will employ 22 people at opening and has the potential to grow to 150 people. Dassault corporate aircraft range in price from $28 to $45 million. Some of their newer designs can fly 6,500 nautical miles without refueling. The Reno facility will attract aircraft for service from Asia, Central America, Canada and throughout the U.S.

Locating this center in Reno will help establish this region as a corporate aviation center and will help attract additional business aviation facilities to the airport. Reno was selected for this facility over airports in California, New Mexico and Utah.

In these challenging economic times, it is wonderful news for our community to have one of the most successful aviation companies in the world launch an operation in the Reno-Tahoe region. Dassault will bring northern Nevada more employment, economic benefit, and a higher profile among the international aviation industry.
Airport prepares for bowling tournament

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is proud to welcome back the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Women's Bowlers Convention.

This event brings more than 41,000 women bowlers to town, with 8,330 five-player teams competing in various tournaments between March 28 and July 4. Approximately 80% of the competitors will be flying into Reno-Tahoe International to play in the tournament bringing family and friends from all 50 states and several foreign countries.

The tournament will get a slow rolling start and then pick up speed in May with approximately 3,000 attendees per week, and ultimately jumping to an average of 4,000 per week in the month of June.

USBC showcases the talents of the world's top-tier women bowlers who typically travel with 1 to 3 bowling balls each. With each ball weighing an average of 12 pounds, that's more than one million pounds of bowling balls rolling through the region. But at Reno-Tahoe International, we'll ensure the teams roll in and out without a hitch.

Art display features man's best friend and more

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport recently celebrated the opening of the latest art exhibit in the Connector Collections Gallery: PAL or "Pets Add Life." This display includes 24 photographs of animals in human-like situations taken by local artist Jeff Ross for the American Pet Products Association's annual calendar.

The Artist's Reception was full of furry pets in all shapes and sizes; from kittens and cats to Daschunds and German Shepherds. The Nevada Humane Society had animals on-site available for adoption and guests were invited to bring their own four legged best friend.

Young vocal students of jazz singer CeCe Gable sang, "How much is that doggie in the window?" and other musical selections while keyboardist Ken Pettiford kept the beat going.

State Senator Randolph Townsend shared a personal account with the audience of how he adopted his beloved Blood Hounds and Labradors in Nevada through the last several years. He shared the joy they bring to his life and the honor it was to participate in one of the featured photographs in the airport art display.

Thanks to all who made the PAL art exhibit opening something to really howl about!
