Award winning Stead Airport

The USAF Thunderbirds announced their selection of The National Championship Air Races as the Best Air Race of 2008 at the International Council of Air Shows annual convention this past December in Las Vegas. The Reno Air Race Association recognized that the honor was due, in large part, to the professional staff and excellent airfield at the Reno-Stead airport.

At the January Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) Board of Trustees meeting, Former Reno Air Race Chair and current Chair of the RTAA Board Tom Gribbin, presented Skip Polak, Manager of the Reno-Stead Airport with this commemorative photograph signed by the Thunderbirds.

This award-winning airfield attracts student pilots, aviation enthusiasts and highly skilled technical flyers from around the world. It's no surprise then that the US Navy Blue Angels have chosen to perform at the 2009 National Championship Air Races in September.

The Business of Air Service Development

In today's economy, airlines are interested in one thing - profitability. And it's the job of the Air Service Business Development department at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport to demonstrate to the airlines that RNO is a profitable market. Profit is created by passengers purchasing the seats an airline offers on the route.  Airlines refer to this as "demand."  Airlines use load factor, or percentage of seats filled, as a measurement of this demand.  If load factors are high, carriers may consider additional service. If load factors continue to be weak, airlines will eliminate flights.

In November 2008, airlines serving RNO reported an average load factor of 70%, while the nationwide average was 80%.

Airlines have a limited number of aircraft and can only offer a certain number of flights.  Communities from all across the nation compete for these flights, with each community working hard to prove that they deserve airline service.

RNO's Air Service Development department develops business proposals that include community highlights and demographics, as well as detailed information on the number of passengers and revenue a flight could generate.  These proposals require hours of analyzing and interpreting data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, airlines and other industry resources.

In addition to data analysis, the President/CEO and Air Service Development staff work closely with organizations such as the RSCVA, other local Convention and Visitors Bureaus, Ski Resorts, and Hotel Casinos. The airport takes this information and meets face to face with airline representatives on average 35- 40 times a year to build a relationship and present the business case.
