Turbulent times ahead

Air travelers can expect a turbulent summer and fall as fuel prices continue to have an unprecedented impact on the airline industry.

As fuel prices continue to climb, passenger numbers and flights may continue to decline at not only Reno-Tahoe International Airport, but at airports across the nation. Rising fuel prices are expected to have a greater impact on the airline industry than the events of 9/11.

In the past few months, Aloha and ATA have gone out of business. Continental will no longer offer service at RTIA starting this September. Airlines across the country have reduced their flight schedules. In comparing September 2007 to September 2008, Reno will feel the impact of these changes through the loss of about 7 percent of its flights. Airports nationwide are feeling the impact. For example, Oakland International Airport has lost nearly 23 percent of its flights.

Ticket prices are expected to continue to rise. Airlines are adding fees on checked bags, imposing fuel surcharges and charging for soft drinks and other services.

The good news for Reno-Tahoe is that Southwest Airlines, which offers the majority of flights at RTIA, is in the best financial condition of any airline in the nation. Southwest's strong presence in the community could help the airport weather the fuel crisis.

Ticket Counters Moving

Airline ticket counters are relocating at Reno-Tahoe International Airport to allow construction of the Airport Baggage Check-in Project (ABC).

Southwest Airlines has already moved from the north end of the old ticket lobby to the south end of the temporary lobby that has been built on the former front curb of the terminal. United Airlines will relocate its ticket counter from the north end of the old lobby to the south end of the temporary lobby on the morning of July 9. All ticket counter relocations will be completed by August 5.
WN-UA Move
This summer, travelers should arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before their scheduled flight departure. Signage and customer service staff will help guide passengers to the correct counter locations.

The ticket counter relocations will allow the old lobby to be closed while the airport constructs a new, state of the art, hi-tech baggage screening project. The ABC Project will move the large baggage screening machines that have cluttered the lobby for the past 6 years to an area far from the public eye.

The new baggage screening system will be integrated with new ticket counters and a new lobby that will reflect the Reno-Tahoe region. When the project is complete in December 2009, and during the temporary lobby operation, customers will drop bags at airline ticket counters without having to wait in a second line for bags to be screened.
The Connector Collections Gallery has gone WILD...

Wild for Nevada, that is!  Wild Nevada is a photographic display, highlighting the artistic beauty of the great State of Nevada.  From the Black Rock Desert to Mt. Charleston, these 23 photographs will take
your breath away and leave you ready to explore Nevada's Wilderness.

Wild Nevada

Wild Nevada comes to the airport compliments of Friends of Nevada Wilderness.  Friends of Nevada Wilderness is dedicated to preserving all qualified Nevada public lands as wilderness.
The Connector Collections Gallery is free and located on the second floor between concourses B and C, just before the security checkpoints.  Wild Nevada will be on display in the gallery through mid-September 2008.

Volleyball festival is a hit

Volleyball

Reno-Tahoe International Airport helped set the stage for a fun-filled week during the arrival of 18,000 Volleyball Festival attendees June 27.

A full-size volleyball court set-up in Baggage Claim served as a stage where the local Capital City Volleyball team bumped, set and spiked to the music of a DJ. Also taking to the floor were the international team of dancers from the El Dorado's spectacular show "Floorplay."

The annual Volleyball Festival brings thousands of international teenage girls with their parents, families and coaches to the region for tournament games that bring excitement and economic benefit to the community. The airport demonstrated its appreciation with a fun, fast paced welcome that coincided with the arrival of several teams.

One of the many teams that arrived during the mix of music, dance, and sport was the Illinois Performance Volleyball team. Chicago players Kailey Arlen and Sarah White, both 16, said they hadn't been to the festival or the area before. "We've been to the national qualifiers, but we haven't really been anywhere else," Arlen said. "From the atmosphere here in the airport, I can tell that I'm going to have a lot of fun."

Creating memorable welcome events for large conventions at the airport helps make the all-important first impression on travelers entering the community. The goal of an airport welcome event is to demonstrate how much the region appreciates hosting large conventions.
"The best way in and out of the community is getting even better."
