Summer Travel Tips
This summer, it is more important than ever to be an educated traveler. Recent airline industry changes mean that you might encounter additional air carrier fees the next time you fly. However, some of these costs can be managed by planning ahead.
Always check the airline's website or call them before departing for the airport. Inquire about luggage limitations and what fees are assessed for additional bags checked. Also, ask about costs for oversized and overweight bags and research the possibility of charges for skycap services.
A way to minimize these fees is to pack light and consolidate family luggage. Each ticketed passenger is allowed 1 carry-on bag & 1 personal item, but don't forget the Transportation Security Administration's "3-1-1" rule that limits the amount of liquids, gels and aerosols that can be carried through the security check-points. (Anything that exceeds 3.4 ounces will need to be placed inside checked luggage.) Additional summer travel tips include:
- Arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes to 2 hours prior to your scheduled departure.
- Use the airline's website to acquire a boarding pass before arriving at the airport.
- Call the airline to ensure the flight is on time.
- If your child is traveling as an unaccompanied minor, make certain that the person dropping off or picking up has photo identification and all necessary contact information for the child. (Contact the airline for specific rules and procedures.)
- Gate Passes are provided by the individual airlines, at their discretion, for those passengers needing special assistance to the gates. Identification is required for all attendants/escorts.
- Passengers 18 years of age or over, must bring proper identification.
- Pack your patience and enjoy your travel experience.

Broken Wing 2008 Disaster Exercise a Success

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority would like to thank the 40 agencies and volunteers who participated in the airport's Broken Wing disaster drill on May 15.
While Broken Wing simulated the crash of a Boeing 737 commercial jetliner, the response, skills and cooperation that were practiced will pay dividends for our community for years to come.
Reno-Tahoe International and Reno-Stead Airports are Northern Nevada's most important emergency assets. If an earthquake, flood or air crash strikes our community, the airports will be our region's lifeline to the outside world.
It is imperative that we keep our airport operating during a community disaster. Broken Wing helped build cohesion and relationships with regional agencies that will serve us well if a real crisis impacts our community.
The airport would like to offer its sincere appreciation to the community leaders, agencies and first responders who helped us prepare for a day we all hope never comes.

Caterina's, A Sweet Addition

The Airport recently welcomed a sweet addition to its number of delightful concessions.
Caterina's, a chocolate and candy confectionary located across from McDonald's, offers passengers a wide assortment of tempting treats and gifts to satisfy any taste. Offering world famous chocolate such as Ghirardelli, Lindt, See's and Dove, Caterina's also offers local varieties such as Grandma's Fudge Factory.
Candies are also plentiful with an extensive selection of Jelly Bellies, mix and match taffies, hard candies, gummy treats and many assorted dipped fruits and licorice. Novelty, organic and sugar-free items are also offered, allowing Caterina's to boast that they truly do have something for everyone.

ABC Update
The Airport Baggage
Check-in project (ABC) is well underway at the Reno-Tahoe International
Airport. The ABC project will dramatically improve the check-in process for
travelers departing the region.

Since March, Q&D Construction has been busy building the temporary Ticket Lobby that will house the airline ticket counters. Beginning at the end of June, Southwest Airlines will move from its current location at the north end of the Ticket Lobby to the south end of the temporary Ticket Lobby.
After the July 4th holiday, one by one, the rest of the airlines will relocate to the temporary structure. Once all the airlines have moved to the temporary lobby, the old lobby will close to allow construction of a new, hi-tech, baggage screening and bag belt project.
During the summer, passengers should add an extra twenty minutes to their normal travel time, to allow enough time for check-in during construction. To avoid delays, download boarding passes before coming to the airport or travel with carry-on luggage only.
And remember to visit www.constructiontruths.com for the latest construction updates, maps and pictures of the project. | |
