Greetings!
The Dog days of summer are here..humid, sticky, great for two things...the beach and yoga!
Our focus of the month will be upward facing dog and all of the heart opening variations of this posture. Bow- WOW!!!
Also we have a new way to refresh and refuel after yoga class: Coconut water. If you are not aware of the greatness of this wonder beverage read more here. We will be giving out samples this weekend so make sure you check in with Sarah at the front desk to try it out! Three flavors: Natural, Mango and Passionfruit! Yummmmmy.
Health Benefits of Coconut Water
Coconuts can add flavor, variety and--best of all--healthy nutrients to your diet. Coconuts are rich in lauric acid, which is known for being antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal, and boosts the immune system.
Fresh coconut juice is one of the highest sources of electrolytes known to man, and can be used to prevent dehydration, for instance in cases of diarrhea or strenuous exercise, instead of a sports drink. Some remote areas of the world even use coconut juice intravenously, short-term, to help hydrate critically ill patients and in emergency situations.
* Other health benefits of coconuts and coconut oil include: * Help you lose weight, or maintain your already good weight * Reduce the risk of heart disease * Lower your cholesterol * Improve conditions in those with diabetes and chronic fatigue * Improve Crohn's, IBS, and other digestive disorders * Prevent other disease and routine illness with its powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents * Increase metabolism and promotes healthy thyroid function * Boost your daily energy * Rejuvenate your skin and prevent wrinkles
There is still room for Yoga and Hiking this weekend, so sign up soon, only 6 spots open! I am getting the Fall programming up on the web, you can catch up with the bounty of the offerings on the Workshops page of the website! Learn Ashtanga (Modified), Gentle Beginners Series, Nutrition workshops and more...

Focus of the Month: Upward Facing Dog Urdhva Mukha Svanasana _____________________________________________________
One can Google upward facing dog and see so many variations on the shape of this posture. Many show knees on the floor, toes tucked , head thrown back!!! And though these may be acceptable variations in some yoga traditions, but in my experience as a teacher these variations do not always allow room for a healthy alignment.
A common posture in our culture is to close through our chest, shortening our pectoralis muscles, weakening the muscles between the shoulder blades (rhomboids) and weakening our postural muscles (erector spinae). In addition, our hip flexor muscles (psoas, rectus femoris or quadriceps) become short and weak due to the sitting we do. Upward dog reverses these motions. It causes us to open across the chest and into the hip flexors and asks our erector spinae, rhomboids, and core musculature to awaken. [read more on the website & practice in class]

Teacher Training: with Max Strom September 12-20, 2009 _____________________________________________________
Segment 1: Foundations Building the Temple [details]
[please email me (alicia@eastonyoga.com) to be added to our Teacher Training information email list. Full information packets will be available in July]
Just when I think I've learned so much in my 7 years of
yoga, I am humbled & blessed to realize I'm still just beginning my
journey. After spenind one week in May with Max Strom at a Teacher Training, I began to realize that yoga will and can change your life! Max's insight into the true practice of yoga as a connection
into the whole body and not a contortion of the physical body is
profound.
I am pleased to announce that we will begin to host
Max for a series of Teacher Trainings in 2009. Completion of all 4 segments is accredited with The Yoga Alliance 200RYT certification.
Max's Teacher Trainings
are open to students with a regular yoga practice who want to deepen
their understating of the holistic practice of Hatha Vinyasa Flow and
pranayama. Whether you wish to deepen you practice or continue through
all 4 segments his training is of immense value. If you are already a
teacher and wish to gain further insight into Max's yoga philosophy I
guarantee you'll deepen your understanding of the practice! And since it
is so close to home, no travel fees!
Max will be here in March 2009 for a series of workshops, details here.
