Greetings!

It has been a banner year for maple sugaring in New Hampshire.  Helping to feed the fire of some friends' evaporator and joining in festivities that accompany the annual syrup ritual, Bob reflects on getting to the essence of our experiences in life and leadership.

Last month Peggy and Leslie Jose hosted the first Reiki training to take place at Birch Corner.  Peggy writes about the weekend in her article in The View.

In the midst of the world's turmoil, may we embrace the hope that springs from the earth's annual rebirth that its creatures will discover the way to live in peace.

Yours in new beginnings,
Peggy and Bob MacArthur

Birch Corner Hosts Reiki Training

Last month we hosted our first Reiki I & II trainings at Birch Corner.   Friend and colleague, Leslie Jose, and I conducted the sessions.

The arrival of spring blessed us with a couple of sunny days warm enough to invite people outside for meditation.  One participant even enjoyed her first barefoot walk of the year.

Because two participants are in the veterinary field and intend to bring Reiki healing into their work,  I was able to share my experience practicing Reiki with horses.   Many of you know that Bob and I coach students in the Touched By A Horse Equine Gestalt Coaching Method ™ Certification Program.

Sugaring Off: Getting to the Essence

 Bob MacArthur

This year's maple sugaring season was one of the best in recent memory here in New Hampshire, and I had a chance to participate.  The experience left many impressions.  The most lasting was the notion of distilling something down to its essence.  That's a pretty good metaphor for daily living and for the challenges of leadership.

Liquid gold

There is a reason that maple syrup is called liquid gold.  I am talking about REAL maple syrup here, not the mislabeled, corn-based fructose stuff.  The sap of the sugar maple tree contains an elixir that many believe is the height of sweetness to the palette.  The challenge is to capture it, because it takes between 30-40 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup.  Little wonder that a gallon sells for $70-80.

We have several friends in the area who produce syrup.  Some do it as a hobby and some as a commercial enterprise.   I spent time with friends who boil as a hobby.  I had a lot of fun, and I learned some valuable lessons.
