Greetings!
Those of you who like big picture trends will find Jeremy Rifkin's latest book a must read. See The Ultimate Race (below). For those of you who are nurturing your interior life Eckhart Tolle's Stillness Speaks is a compelling resource. We have kept the articles short and have provided links for you to explore in greater depth, if you choose.
Also, just a reminder that we have a few openings in our Reiki trainings and healing retreat in October. Please let us know if you or someone you know might be interested.
Finally, we thought you might enjoy an actual late summer view from Birch Corner.
Yours in new beginnings,

The Ultimate Race
Bob MacArthur
There is a race underway, and we are all in it. On the one hand, our brains predispose us to reach out to each other, and our communication technology links us to each other globally in a way we humans have never experienced before as a species.
On the other hand, the energy we consume through our technology is depleting the earth's resources. Can our empathic natures connect with one another in time to find a sustainable relationship with the resources of our planet?
Drawing on research in the sciences and social sciences, Jeremy Rifkin frames the challenges facing our species in his most recent book, The Empathic Civilization. (1) To see an engaging ten minute introduction on YouTube, click here.
Research tells us we are wired for empathy
Rifkin takes issue with long held beliefs that human beings are by nature aggressive, materialistic, utilitarian and self interested.

Stillness Speaks
One of the recurring themes in our coaching is that people are stuck in stories that no longer serve them. We also know from our own experience meditating how often our internal chatter disrupts our focus.
The stories we tell ourselves and the endless internal chatter are companions of our mind's capacity to think. They are also champions of our ego, which seeks to assert itself at every chance.
In Stillness Speaks Eckhart Tolle has given us all a wonderful book of meditations. It is a small resource filled with simple and profound observations designed to connect us with the stillness within. It is that place of stillness that allows us to move beyond our active minds and emotions, our egos, and discover the depths of peacefulness and serenity.
We highly recommend this little book for those of you committed to expanding your awareness of and connection to your inner self.
