The way that I shop, cook and eat has become so second nature to me that I sometimes forget the step by step learning process that got me here.   A big part of that process was just paying attention to what was IN my food, my shampoo, my cleaning products (and of course whatever I was putting on or IN my kids!).
 
The first step is awareness - realizing that your tomato sauce HAS high fructose corn syrup or MSG in it, or recognizing that your deoderant has Tricoslan (don't worry - I explain that later).
So I guess my best advice is to just start reading your labels and become conscious of what you have.  Then .. step by step .. see if you can improve on what you buy, or even perhaps make it yourself.
 
In this issue I identify 6 of the scariest ingredients in food, personal care products and cleaners.  This isn't to SCARE you into buying more natural or making your own, but just to help you become more "conscious" of things that can certainly be harmful to your health.

Tahini Trick
 
Are you lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy?
 
I am too---which is why  I have been playing with sesame tahini.
 
Try adding tahini to your favorite pasta (cooked) with sea salt and olive oil to create a make believe "mac n cheese" or add tahini to  your wraps and sandwiches for a slightly cheesy flavor.

6 Super Scary Ingredients to Avoid
 
Tricoslan:   found in deoderants (old spice), toothpaste and personal care products. Tricoslan can react with water to produce chloroform gas. If inhaled in large enough quantities, chloroform can cause depression, liver problems and, in some cases, cancer.

Hydrogenated Oil (of any kind): aka Trans Fat. Found in peanut butter, butter replacement spreads adn lots of packaged foods. Top nutritionists at Harvard have concluded that trans fat could be responsible for an many as 30,000 premature coronary deaths per year.
  
Parabens: preservative found in many hair care products and cosmetics.Parabens have been linked to breast cancer. 
 
Autolyzed Yeast  - another name for MSG - this flavor enhancer also stimulates the appetite (to make you eat  more) and causes headaches in some people. Found in lots of restaurant food (not just Chinese) and salty packaged foods like noodle mixes and soups.
 
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) -When combined with other chemicals, SLES can create nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens. It is frequently disguised in semi-natural cosmetics with the explanation "comes from coconut".  Also found in soaps, shampoos and toothpaste!
 
High Fructose Corn Syrup - you know this is bad but do you know where it hides?  Heinz Ketchup, Motts Applesauce (some varieties), Northland Cranberry Juice, Pepperidge Farms Honey Oat Bran Bread (and many other breads) - and in tons of fast food choices!
