Reflections
If there is a Biblical personality with whom I most identify, it is Thomas. Thomas is depicted, especially in John's gospel, as the disciple who doubted. He was the one, who, after the resurrection of Jesus, needed a bit of proof to believe that Jesus had, in fact, been raised from the dead. The other disciples were already on board with the miraculous. Thomas was a bit more measured.
Even though my life is rooted in belonging to the tribe called Methodists, it is one thing to belong to a group; it is another to believe in the One to whom the tribe adheres for direction. My faith journey has been more about questing and testing than simply believing.
It is not that I didn't believe in God. I simply needed more. More assurance. More direction. More... My faith was shaped around campfires singing "Kum Ba Ya" and at youth retreats with arms locked around friends singing James Taylor's "You've Got a Friend." Hardly good Biblical theology, it was warm and fuzzy. That may be why the church finds itself where it is today. We baby boomers were looking for a buddy, and Jesus was calling for taking up a cross. I do not remember exactly when I crossed over from Thomas to Simon Peter. There was, though, that moment when I woke up and said "Thou are the Christ! The son of the living God."
"I believe" was uttered every Sunday of my youth. We declared it each week at First United Methodist Church, Fulton, MS, first in Sunday School and then in worship. "I believe in God the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. On the third day he rose from the dead, he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of the Father." In youth choir we sang our beliefs with an engaging arrangement of the Nicene Creed. At the end of the day, my parents said little to me about what I should believe or think. Yet, the air we breathed was steeped in the faithful life we were living. Over the last 55 years, our family life experience is more the exception than the rule. Yet, I am convinced that the longing for a life of meaning is still as real as it ever was. If the literature on spirituality is an indicator, restlessness is plentiful.
In our tribe, we speak often these days about "making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." The first step in becoming a disciple is following Jesus. We know that best happens in a faith community among others who have said, "I believe." It is to apprentice oneself to another. Very few of us arrive at believing in Jesus Christ without watching someone else who has walked around with him for a while. It is best done in authentic communities of people who know they belong.
John 14:12 I assure you that whoever believes in me will do the works that I do. They will do even greater works than these because I am going to the Father.

"Tide"ings from Around the District
Dear Friends in Christ,
Happy New Year! It is traditional among Methodists to begin each new year with renewal of our covenant with God. I have always found the time of covenant renewal each January to be particularly meaningful and inspiring. What a wonderful way to start a new year.
Jeremiah 31:31-34 describes the new covenant that God will make with God's people. Through the prophet Jeremiah, the Lord says, "I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people" (v. 33). This is the covenant - that God will be our God and we will be God's people. What a wonderful promise! This is certainly a covenant we need to be reminded of often.
Wesley's Covenant Prayer is one means of remembering and renewing our covenant with God. It reads as follows:
I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for theee, exalted for thee or brought low by thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thou art mind, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.
Each of us entered into covenant with God at our baptism. Can we sincerely renew that covenant this year? These will not be easy words to pray. It will be difficult indeed to "freely and heartily" give all things to God's "pleasure and disposal." This goes against our very nature. Nevertheless, it is by God's grace that we are able to pray this prayer and mean it. May God give to each of us the grace to pray these words and the strength to live them out. For me, the Wesleyan Covenant Renewal Service is one of the most meaningful services in all of our Methodist tradition. The blessings of God be upon you in this new year!
In Christ,
Dr. Eric Pridmore, Poplarville FUMC

Mission Trip to Nicaragua
Danny Box (Winborn Chapel UMC) lead a mission to trip in December to Condega, Nicaragua. The group worked on projects at the United Methodist Church, completing a kitchen and classrooms that were located behind the church sanctuary. The work was physically demanding, but by the end of the trip, all were tired and happy with the results. Each afternoon, the group held Bible class with the children that included arts and crafts. An average of 25 children appeared each afternoon. On the last day, each child received a Christmas gift bag filled with essential items, and it was during this time, that a double rainbow appeared in the Eastern sky. Members of the team included Rev. Cecil Locke, Trey Cunningham and Clay Grubbs. Their Nicaraguan companions were Rigoberto Acuna Guerrero, Sigard Monroe, Pastor Juan de Dios, Pastor Edgar Boanerges Raudez and his wife, Eunice. Danny is available to speak with anyone about Condega. He can be reached at danny.box@hotmail.com or by phone at 601-543-3266. |

Way to Go Gulfport FUMC! Below is a note received from a visitor who attended morning worship at Gulfport FUMC on January 8:
"Hello. My husband Don and I attended your morning worship today, and we wanted to let you and your congregation know how much we appreciated the warm welcome extended by every person we met. We were invited for coffee and the famous donuts (soon not for the youth who will be headed to Sunday School), for classes meeting after church, and for our return should we visit again.
While we are moving on to Pensacola next Saturday, we know that if we return to Gulfport next winter, we will definitely return to your church. With such wide range of ages and cultures, your minds, doors, and hearts are certainly open. You have a very impressive list of ministries and the eagerness of people to assist with those.
Several years ago, when I was on administrative council in our home UMC, we viewed a video about being a welcoming church. Your church could have easily been the poster church in that video.
Over the years, we have attended services in many UMC churches, and it always feels like home, and it is easy to see how we are all part of a greater family. Thank you for welcoming us to your worship.
God's blessings to you and your church." |

Free Lenten Devotions Program
The Society of St. Andrew invites your congregation to participate in their 2012 Lenten devotion and giving program, "Living Proof." In keeping with the traditions of Lent, the Society of St. Andrew invites your congregation to participate in a program of spiritual reflection, prayer, and giving. SoSA's Lenten devotion program challenges the reader to take seriously the scriptural injunctions to care for the poor, while also providing an opportunity to feed our hungry neighbors.
Each day during Lent, our gifted and talented writers, through scripture and prayer, share where they have seen Jesus at work in the world. As you make the journey to the cross this year, use these devotions and prayers to reflect on your own "Living Proof" of Jesus Christ." The Society of St. Andrew salvages fresh produce that cannot be sold and delivers it to agencies that feed hungry people in the United States.
TO ORDER
Learn more at http://www.endhunger.org/lent.htm. For questions, or to order SoSA's free Lenten devotion materials and Good Friday Fast, you can also contact The Rev. Jennifer Vestal Moore at church@endhunger.org or 800-333-4597.
