MSP Spring Benefit Draws Over 400 MSP Honors Somaly Mam and Announces New Human Trafficking Initiative
The Board of Directors, staff and clients of My Sisters' Place thank the over 400 people in attendance at our Spring Benefit, Voices for Change, on March 11, 2010. The participation and generosity of friends old and new, individuals and corporations will allow MSP to continue providing the myriad of services for families throughout Westchester County.
A special thanks to the evening's co-chairs from Left: Darren and Carolyn Ullerick, Steve and Eileen Farbman, Deborah Slaner-Larkin, Karen Cheeks-Lomax, MSP Executive Director, Somaly Mam, Voices For Change Award Recipient, and Anahaita Kotval and Zubeen Shroff |
Those present were awed at the remarks of Somaly Mam, a survivor of human trafficking and there was thunderous applause in the room when District Attorney Janet DiFiore presented Somaly with the "Voices for Change" award. Plucked from her home by a man posing as her grandfather, as a young child, Somaly was held in sexual servitude and freed years later by a French aid worker. Somaly has devoted her life to ending human trafficking, our modern day slavery. The Somaly Mam Foundation currently runs 5 shelters for women and girls, some as young as 10 years old, all from similar circumstances.
The event launched MSP's exciting new initiative with LexisNexis Corporation. Announced by Carolyn Ullerick, the company's Global CFO, the Human Trafficking Initiative is a collaboration of My Sisters' Place, LexisNexis, and the Somaly Mam Foundation to respond to the increased prevalence of human trafficking in the United States through the creation of a Human Trafficking Fellowship. The Fellow will assist victims with a range of services including research and development of protocols, trainings, and best practice models for intake, case management and legal representation of victims of human trafficking. In addition, a strategic goal of the Initiative is to replicate this model of service delivery throughout the United States and to share our experience with international organizations serving victims of human trafficking.
Many thanks to all of our individual and corporate sponsors and supporters.
