MSP Participates in Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week
Greetings!

While facts and details are still emerging and our justice system still presumes innocence, the recent and emerging stories of significant elected officials in New York State as either perpetrators of or bystanders to domestic violence are deeply troubling.  They are also reminders of why we do the work that we do and why it is crucial that My Sisters' Place continues to educate, raise awareness and advocate on behalf of victims everywhere.

Next week, we will be commemorating over 33 years of service to Westchester County with our annual spring benefit, Near and Far...Voices for Change.  We are pleased to be honoring Somaly Mam of the Somaly Mam Foundation for her courageous fight against human trafficking and her own personal and touching journey from circumstances most of us can scarcely imagine.

The evening will also feature an encore performance from our very own Next Generation Performers under the guidance of Milton Vann.  We hope you will join us for this inspirational evening and be a part of our tremendous efforts to serve victims of domestic violence and human trafficking in Westchester County.

Best regards,

Karen

MSP Participates in Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week

This year, during Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week (February 1-6), MSP's Domestic Violence Education and Prevention Program (DVEP), partnered with the SkillsUSA group at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers to educate teens and teachers about teen dating violence.

SkillsUSA is a national organization created by teachers as a way to reach and develop their students. This organization prepares students to enter the work force by teaching leadership and professional development skills, and by providing opportunities to put these skills to work. MSP's DVEP program has trained the students of SkillsUSA to be Jr. Facilitators, and act as co-presenters for DVEP's teen dating violence presentations at local area high schools.

During Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week the Jr. Facilitators launched a mini public service announcement campaign, and made daily announcements of startling statistics relating to dating violence over Roosevelt High School's loudspeaker system. Additionally, DVEP held a week long tabling event in the school's cafeteria. During this event students were offered the opportunity to take a "Healthy Relationships Pledge". Each student that took the pledge created and signed a large "End the Violence" banner which was posted in the school's cafeteria.

Events such as these are just one of the many ways in which the DVEP program reaches out to students to educate them about gender stereotypes and teen dating violence. In an effort to reach a larger teen audience, MSP's DVEP Program collaborates with over 50 schools and community groups throughout Westchester County -- targeting middle and high school students. Each year, through their special presentations, DVEP reaches 7,500 adolescents - promoting healthy relationships and the prevention of teen dating violence.
