Greetings!
In 2009, we again expanded our outreach and advocacy efforts. Our Volunteer Team and our members continue to make a significant difference for animals, people and the planet! Society of PEACE highlights from 2009 include the following:
- We hosted public film presentations of "Eating" (3rd Edition), "Peaceable Kingdom" (2nd Edition) and "A Life Connected: Vegan Video".
- Our Volunteer Team sponsored public outreach tables and vegan bake sales during several campaigns, including Meatout Week, Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale Week, Earth Day, and Vegetarian Awareness Month.
- Our organization was featured in the national "Meatout Mondays" e-newsletter and in Change Magazine. Society of PEACE members were also featured on KPFT Houston's Vegan World Radio, KTEP El Paso's Animal Concerns of Texas Radio, the Supreme Master TV Noteworthy News program, and on two Houston Media Source TV programs.
- Our organization sponsored public outreach tables at several annual festivals, community venues and diverse ethnic & religious events, offering free literature on veganism, animal rights and earth-friendly living. At Earth Day Houston, our volunteers helped nearly 200 children plant their own organic vegetable seedlings!
- Our volunteers donated vegan baked goods and held special events to raise much needed funds for farm animal sanctuaries and animal rescue/rehab organizations, including Peaceful Prairie Farm Animal Sanctuary, New Dawn MT Farm Animal Sanctuary and the Texas Wildlife Rehab Coalition. Our largest bake sale fundraising event was held during the 1st Annual Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale Week!
- Our volunteers partnered with Houston's Food Not Bombs to provide free vegan meals to the hungry during Meatout Week and during the holiday season as part of our community service. Volunteers also donated warm blankets to those in need.
- Some of our members launched vegan-owned & operated businesses. Society of PEACE also participated in the Grand Opening event for a new vegan restaurant in Houston.
- Our organization hosted events for World Farm Animals Day and World Go Vegan Days featuring prominent speakers in the movement, such as Rutgers University Animal Rights Professor Gary L. Francione and New Dawn MT Farm Sanctuary founder Sue Eakins. We also helped promote events in Houston featuring such prominent figures as Gene Baur, Dr. Neal Barnard, T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and Dick Gregory.
- We hosted several vegan community dinners, potluck picnics, and annual outreach events for the public. Some of those events included our Annual Vegan Earth Day picnic, our Annual "Celebrate Freedom, Live Vegan" picnic, and our 4th Annual "Texas Veggin'-out Days" campaign to support veggie restaurants statewide.
- Some of our members educated the public by offering vegan cooking classes.
- Our organization hosted Houston's largest Annual Vegan "Gentle Thanksgiving" Feast, which continues to grow in size each year!
- We launched our new website at www.vegansocietyofpeace.org!
Thank YOU for making all of this possible and for being an important part of our growing Society of PEACE Community. We greatly appreciate your support and look forward to another outstanding year ahead. We also extend our gratitude to the many dedicated volunteers who help us achieve so much!
May the New Year inspire everyone to join us in creating a more peaceful and compassionate world for ALL living beings!
