Greetings!
Welcome to the August issue of E-PEACE!
It's that time of year when we start gearing up for many annual outreach campaigns! This month, our 100% volunteer-run organization is having a "volunteer roundup" event in Houston. As we continue to grow, we need additional support team members to help with our ongoing events & outreach.
For our members residing outside Houston and around the globe, there are plenty of ways to do positive outreach in your local community. You can distribute literature by tabling or leafleting, organize a vegan event in your area, create a blog or submit informative letters to your local newspaper. Many of the campaigns supported by Society of PEACE are actually global campaigns.
It is our hope that you are inspired every day to be a voice for the animals, the earth, compassion and peace. Each of us can make a huge difference in the world. Like the saying goes, "think globally, act locally"! Essentially, the power to educate & inspire others lies within each of us!
We sincerely thank you for reading our newsletter each month and for sharing it with others. We are grateful for your support!
For a compassionate world,

Action Alerts |

Take Action for Animals
- Ask Congress to pass the Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2009! (From the Humane Society of the United States - HSUS.org) One in seven garments made with animal fur are allowed to be unlabeled under a loophole in the law. Many consumers do not want to support animal fur, but without full labeling, they are stuck guessing whether the trim on a jacket is real or faux. Sign HSUS' online form and then make brief, polite phone calls to your U.S. Representative and two U.S. Senators and urge them to support and co-sponsor H.R. 2480/S. 1076. You can reach your federal legislators by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.
- Speak out against proposed fish aquaculture (factory farms) in the Gulf of Mexico! (From Food & Water Watch - FoodandWaterWatch.org) For more than a decade, the U.S. government has been pushing to open public waters to commercial-scale open ocean aquaculture - an industry that involves growing thousands of fish in cages anchored to the seafloor between three and 200 miles off the U.S. coast. Open ocean aquaculture poses serious threats to human health and the marine environments. Sign the online form to ask legislators to stop these "factory farms of the sea",
- Urge Congress to support the Healthy School Lunch Campaign which would include more vegetables, fruits, vegetarian foods and non-dairy beverages in public schools! (From the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine - PCRM.org) The Healthy School Lunch Campaign is dedicated to improving the food served to children in schools by educating government and school officials, food service workers, parents, and others about the food choices best able to promote children's current and long-term health. Menus in most school lunch programs are too high in saturated fat and cholesterol and too low in fiber- and nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes . Sign PCRM's online form & petition asking Congress to implement changes in the Child Nutrition Act that would include healthy vegetarian options.
