Dear Members & Supporters:
Like many here in the Houston and Galveston area, we are now on the road to recovery after Hurricane Ike. There are, however, many animals in our local communities who were abandoned and are still in need. Several animal shelters, organizations & individuals have been working on animal rescue needs since the hurricane and we wanted to share some valuable information we've gathered with you.
Since
Society of PEACE is an animal advocacy organization, we have created an
"Ike Animals in Need" information portal on our website, which is dedicated to the rescue & relief efforts for the thousands of animals affected by Hurricane Ike. On the webpage portal, we provide links to resources and animal rescue groups, shelters & individuals, as well as websites and news stories related to animals impacted by the hurricane.
As you'll see, there is still an urgent need for animal fostering, adoptions, supplies and donations by many local animal shelters & organizations throughout the area. The
Rescue Bank (a Houston "food bank" for animals) is another organization in need of donations and they support many local animal shelters with pet food and rebuilding materials. You'll also see that there are some fantastic individuals actively rescuing & feeding abandoned animals in some of the hard hit areas near the coast. These individual "animal heroes" are also in need of donations, pet food and basic supplies. You can find more information on local efforts at our
"Ike Animals in Need" information page.
A local "animal hero" we wish to highlight is Society of PEACE member
Kathy Landry. As a resident of Kemah (near Galveston Bay), Kathy was out rescuing abandoned animals the day before the hurricane and continues to venture into areas to feed & rescue as needed. Kathy also spent several months in the field during the Hurricane Katrina animal rescues and we thank her for her continued dedication to helping animals during emergencies. If you would like to sponsor Kathy Landry's animal rescue work, please visit her
website for supply & donation information.
Our thanks also go out to the following Society of PEACE members for diligently forwarding information to us and cross posting information on our
message board: Patrick, Melanie, Jerrilyn, Shirley, Robin, Kathy and many others. This was a great help in creating a webpage portal dedicated to local animal rescue efforts after the hurricane.
We hope you'll find the "Ike Animals in Need" page useful! The page will continue to be available online as needed.
