These logs are an incredibly important part of the tutoring process, as RT staff uses the logs to gauge student improvement, and this helps us to know when to test our students.

For more information on how to complete a log click here.

If you have any questions, contact Sandy.

Michelle-Linh Nguyen

Meet Michelle-Linh Nguyen. Michelle has been a volunteer with Refugee Transitions since July 2010 - making this her one year mark!

As you can probably tell from the photo of her and her student, Htoo, Michelle is an incredibly enthusiastic volunteer and is a great friend as well as mentor for Htoo.

Michelle has gone out of her way to make lessons more exciting and has helped Htoo navigate her community (going to doctors appointments, signing up for community college classes, etc). And just recently,  the two made the trip out to Monterey to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium together.

Check out our blog for an interview with Michelle!

It's that time...kicking off Refugee Transitions' summer camps!

Summer is one of the most exciting times here at Refugee Transitions, in large part because of our summer camps for refugee youth!

Staff members have been working tirelessly for the past months organizing our annual overnight camps in the Presidio of San Francisco and  two-week enrichment camp in the South Bay which is now in full swing!

We are just returning from the boy's overnight camp which was this past weekend. In attendance were 20 refugee youth hailing from a total of 10 countries -
Burma, Bhutan, Nepal, Eritrea, Tanzania, Congo, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Liberia, and Tibet. A huge shout out and thank you goes out to volunteer Joe Abbott and  board member Dom Walterspiel who spent the weekend as camp counselors, and also to staff members Lauren Markham, Zar Ni Maung, Sandy Naing, and especially Zack Reidman (who, along with Refugee Youth Leaders Lia Lian and Hser Kaw, coordinated and bought food for some pretty elaborate and delicious meals for the campers).

Updates and stories to come in the next few weeks, after the girl's camp in August. For now, happy summer from everyone at Refugee Transitions!

Meet Torbertha, former student and current summer intern!

Torbetha is a former Refugee Transitions student and now our summer intern. She recently passed her citizenship exam, along with her mother and sister!  She is pictured below with her family and volunteer Debbie Brown (far right) who helped Esther, Torbertha's mother, prepare for the citizenship exam.

My name is Torbertha Torborn. I was born and raised in West Africa, Liberia. I came to the United States in 2004 with my family because there were wars in my country.

I am currently a 4th year student at the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Social Welfare with a concentration in Public Health and an intended major or minor in Anthropology. I am also a current intern at Refugee Transitions and feel fortunate to be in this position because their programs are what equipped me for college and helped my family and me adjust to American culture and society.

In addition to helping my family adjust to American society, a Refugee Transitions volunteer also assisted my mother in studying for the naturalization test. Very recently, my mom, my older sister, and I passed the test together and we're now citizens of the United States! During the citizenship ceremony, I was very emotional - both sad and happy at the same time. Sad because my family and I had come a very long way and had experienced many hardships on our journeys. Happy because, despite these hardships, we all have become well-rounded people and are very focused on pursuing the great opportunities and overcoming any challenges in store for us in the United States.

Activity of the month
Citizenship Preparation

For many Refugee Transitions clients, gaining U.S. citizenship is a life-changing process on an individual level as well as for entire families. This month, we have a few resources for those of you working with students who are interested in preparing for the U.S. citizenship exam.

Here's a video you can watch that covers the steps and requirements for obtaining citizenship.

To summarize the citizenship exam, this is what your student will need to do:

1) Answer a few questions (orally) related to their N-400 application, i.e. Where are you from? Where are you currently working? Were you ever in the military? Your student must know exactly what s/he included in her/his application.

2) Answer 6 of 10 of the 100 questions (orally), i.e. Who is the president of the U.S.? How many senators are there? Who signs bills into law? Who was the first president?
3) Read one of the 100 questions - chosen by the interviewer.
4) Write a dictation from the 100 questions, i.e. the interview could ask your student to write: George Washington was the first president.

"The life of Shreya will be much more better than ours," said Leela Mainali, exhausted but smiling after her daughter's birth. "She will be no more refugee now. She is an American citizen."
