Letter from Executive Director Laura Vaudreuil
Dear Friend of Refugee Transitions,
Greetings! June is an exciting month at Refugee Transitions. We started off last week with a radio interview that will air on four Bay Area stations. Jyoti and Hema, two of our refugee youth students, are featured in the interview.
These two youth will be performing in Home Season 2011, a must-see performance featuring a number of Refugee Transitions students from Burma, Bhutan, and Liberia. The show, which is being held in conjunction with World Refugee Day, runs from Friday, June 17 through Sunday, June 19 at ODC Theater in San Francisco. Details here. Be sure to purchase your tickets soon!
This month we're also gearing up to launch summer programming for refugee youth. While many of us are anticipating fun-filled summer vacations, for newly arrived refugee youth, summer can be a difficult time.
Understanding this, Refugee Transitions holds summer academic and enrichment camps for youth in the Presidio of San Francisco and the South Bay. The camps provide our students with opportunities to practice their English, enjoy the outdoors, play soccer, and participate in art therapy activities. Additionally, youth are able to share their culture with others in a supportive environment and make lasting friendships with peers who have gone through similar experiences.
Please stand in solidarity with refugee youth who yearn to go to camp by making a gift to Refugee Transitions. A gift of $100 makes it possible for one youth to attend camp - which is often the highlight of their summer!
With gratitude for your support, Laura Vaudreuil Executive Director |

Meet Jyoti and Hema: Refugee Transitions Students and Performers in Home Season 2011!
 | | Jyoti (left) and Hema |
Refugee Transitions students Jyoti and Hema made their radio debut last Wednesday at the studios of Alice@97.3, Live 105, 99.7 Now, and KRFC-AM! Along with Executive Director Laura Vaudreuil, Jyoti and Hema will be featured in a weekly public affairs radio show hosted by Liz Saint John. Listen to the podcast here.
Jyoti was born in Bhutan and lived in a refugee camp in Nepal for 15 years. She came to Oakland in 2009 and has just graduated from Oakland International High School. Jyoti loves music and reading books, and she is involved in many community activities to support her fellow students. Next year, she will be attending San Francisco State University and hopes to study international relations, Asian American studies, and possibly biology.
Also originally from Bhutan, Hema lived in a refugee camp in Nepal for 17 years before resettling to Oakland in 2008. Hema is an avid dancer - when she lived in Nepal, she was selected as a backup dancer in a Bollywood film! Next year, Hema will begin a nursing course at Lake Merritt College.
Both Jyoti and Hema are gifted singers and dancers, and you can witness their talents at Home Season 2011!
