Friendly reminder to all home- based volunteers to send in your monthly volunteer logs!

These logs are an incredibly important part of the tutoring process, as RT staff uses the logs to gauge student improvement, and this helps us to know when to test our students.

Volunteer Spotlight
Lauren Nazario

We're happy to feature our first after-school tutor in our Volunteer Spotlight this month!

Lauren Nazario tutors at our after-school program at San Francisco International High School (SFIHS). It has been a pleasure to have her in the tutoring room, and we've been extremely impressed by her enthusiasm, initiative, and ability to relate to the students.

Lauren has made the extra effort to volunteer in the SFIHS classrooms and form relationships with the SFIHS Principal and teachers, which helps her make the greatest difference possible in the after-school program. She takes ownership of explaining assignments to groups of students, and we often hear her laughing along with the students as they work through homework. Thanks Lauren for being an exemplary RT volunteer!

Read our Volunteer of the Week interview with Lauren on the RT blog!

Student Story

Hema

Hema (left) and Praseela

Hema is a student at Oakland International High School, and a Youth Leader with RT. She also attended last year's summer camp (check out information about this year's camps in this newsletter!). Here is a beautiful story that Hema wrote last summer:

My name is Hema. I come from Nepal.

Where I come from, people are much different then here. If you visited my country, you would see natural environment and you would smell sweet food...

Feeling where I am lonely scares me. People think I am not good at what I am trying to do but really I am nice and careful of what I am doing. I am good at being nice to people, helping them and respectful too. I miss my mom and family when I go out at night but I love to be where I am now that I'm with them...

If I were a color, I would be white because in my thoughts white is like snow, symbol of peace, bright. The most important thing to me is to be respectful of everyone and achieve my goals...

In my new home I feel better and different. My dream in California is to be nice student and good to all. I am proud of myself because I can do what I have to do.

I will reach my dreams if I do hard work, try, try, try.

Request for ESL Teaching Materials

Sepi Hosseini, a student in SFSU's TESOL program, is working on a project to create a collection of materials for teaching literacy level students. She intends to organize the materials by skills taught (listening, speaking, reading, writing) - making them easily accessible to literacy-level instructors.

How you can help: Sepi is looking for contributions from RT volunteers! If you have created any lesson plans, activities, handouts, or worksheets on your own, please email sepi.hosseini@gmail.com. Also, don't hesitate to write to Sepi with any questions about this project.

Story from Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya

KALW reporter interviews an Ethiopian refugee

KALW News - Becky Palmstrom

This April, reporter Becky Palmstrom visited the Kakuma refugee camp in Northern Kenya and spoke with Sadia Happi Sora - a single mother who has become a leader in her community.

In this interview, Sadia speaks about her personal experiences, and the experiences of so many women living in refugee camps today.

Currently, 75% of RT's clients are women refugees and immigrants who have resettled throughout the Bay Area.

Listen to the interview here.
