What is the Dao De Jing?
- Dao (Tao) - the Way, the path, the unnamable process of the universe
- De (Te)- virtue, character, inner strength, integrity
- Jing (Ching) - classics, great book
The Dao De Jing, a Chinese classic attributed to Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu, was written in ancient Chinese over 2000 years ago and has since been translated by many, both Eastern and Western. It is considered the foundation of Taoism as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The book is comprised of 81 chapters written in verse and is deliberately ambiguous as is typical in ancient Chinese writing, resulting in endless interpretations. Studying the Dao De Jing moves the student toward a lifestyle that is attuned to the wisdom of the natural world, self-awareness and living without conflict. It is beneficial to learn about the philosophy with someone who has extensively studied the Dao De Jing and fully embraces the Taoist lifestyle. (see below for an ongoing study group) |

The Stages and Benefits of Dao De Jing Study
The study of Dao De Jing assists students in achieving the healthy body and mind of a Taoist lifestyle. This process occurs over a lifetime in the following stages: - Focus on self. During this stage, one finds one's true self, embraces Wu Way where things happen naturally. This is an internal process of letting go of control.
Benefit: Stop fighting with self, stop trying to control what can't change.
- Self knowledge. (what you like and want to do). You now know your core values and can focus on what you do want and stop spending energy on what you don't. Energy can now flow. Knowing what you want is the first step to getting it. "As you wish".
Benefit: Stop focusing on what don't like and don't want and get what you wish for.
- Healing those around you. When you have focused on yourself and discovered your core values and live this lifestyle, you will have good energy and everyone around you will benefit. Things happen naturally: no problems because you are not trying to control things that cannot be controlled.
Benefit: People around you are healed and feel better for being with you.
Many people are excited when they begin this study and right away want to heal their friends and family. BUT, this is out of order. Until the first two stages have been achieved, focusing on self and identifying core values, you cannot truly heal others. Following these stages in order allows the natural process to take place without trying to control it. A Conference Caller Experience "The weekly Dao De Jing Conference call with Dr. Ming Wu and Ms. Joey Wu has done more to put me in touch with the profound message of this ancient Chinese teaching than all the individual study I have done over the past forty years. I have read several different translations of Dao De Jing over the years. Most of them have left me unsatisfied, feeling that a certain ring of spiritual truth and lucidity had been lost. By contrast, the translation we are using, by Tom Tam, is honest and straightforward while unrelentingly pointing to the essence of Tao in all its depth and universality. This, plus the opportunity to discuss the chapters and ask questions in real time, makes the weekly Dao De Jing conference call an invaluable experience, and allows me to apply this teaching in my daily life as never before." -- Michael Leacher
