Gua Sha - An Age Old Healing Technique |
Origin of Gua Sha
Gua Sha originated as a folk medicinal technique, and has a very long history. In "Effective Formulas Handed Down for Generations", written in 1337 by Wei Yilin, a physician of the Yuan Dynasty, it says, "With wet hemp scrape the surface of the neck, elbow, knee and wrist until there is military cutaneous bleeding. Cover the body with thick clothes and quilts. Then administer orally a little porridge or decoction of Chinese green onion and fermented soybean, or fresh Chinese onion tea. After sweating, the illness will be healed. This is an effective method of loosening and relaxing the skin." Technique
The book is a systematic Gua Sha therapy. The technique is to scrape the skin of certain parts of the body to loosen the pores in order to get rid of evil Qi, that means to wake up the Zheng Qi to clean out the evil Qi or wind, and let the body heal itself. That is the purpose of treatment after Gua Sha. There should be military bleeding under the skin in different degrees. Gua Sha therapy used as a folk medicine technique without systematic theoretical foundation is mainly applied in the case of common colds, fever, heat-stroke, pain in the shoulder, back, legs etc. The tools are materials with smooth edges, such as chinaware, silver coins and lubricated with Wan Hua oil (ten thousand flower oil).
Summary Although there are more than 140,000 kinds of disease in modern medicine, all diseases are related to dysfunction of 14 meridians, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. The objective of Gua Sha therapy is to correct the unharmonious in the meridians to recover the normal bodily function. Thus, the Gua Sha of a set meridian and points can be used to treat many diseases. Gua Sha is simple, convenient, and effective and has no side-effects; it has been practiced for centuries by the Chinese people. It is regarded as "a form of acupuncture which does not penetrate the skin, a massage therapy not using the hands directly."
