Canada US Border Declaration

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama recently issued a Declaration on a Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness.  According to the Prime Minister's office, "The Declaration establishes a new long-term partnership that will accelerate the legitimate flows of people and goods between both countries, while strengthening security and economic competitiveness."

CREA Boosts Annual Resale Housing Forecast

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) has revised its 2011 forecast for home sales activity via the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) Systems of Canadian real estate Boards and Associations, and extended it to 2012.

Sales in the second half of 2010 rebounded faster than CREA had previously expected. "The hand-off going into 2011, together with the highs and lows for sales activity posted in 2010, provided guidance for CREA's revised forecast," said Gregory Klump, CREA Chief Economist.

National sales activity is now expected to reach 439,900 units in 2011, representing an annual decline of 1.6 per cent. In 2012, CREA forecasts that national sales activity will rebound by three per cent to 453,300 units, which is roughly on par with the ten year average.

Canada welcomes highest number of legal immigrants in 50 years

In 2010, Canada welcomed the highest number of legal immigrants in more than 50 years, at 280,636 permanent residents, Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism announced recently .

"While other Western countries cut back on immigration during the recession, our government kept legal immigration levels high. Canada's post-recession economy demands a high level of economic immigration to keep our economy strong," said Minister Kenney. "In 2010, we welcomed the highest number of permanent residents in the past 50 years to support Canada's economic recovery while taking action to maintain the integrity of Canada's immigration system with the introduction of the Preventing Human Smugglers from Abusing Canada's Immigration System Act."

US reaches H-1B Cap

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced recently that it has received a sufficient number of H-1B petitions to reach the statutory cap for fiscal year (FY) 2011.  USCIS is notifying the public that, Jan. 26, 2011, is the final receipt date for new H-1B specialty occupation petitions requesting an employment start date in FY2011.

The final receipt date is the date on which USCIS determines that it has received enough cap-subject petitions to reach the limit of 65,000.

UK Government outlines visa reforms for workers

New details of the government's radical changes to the work visa route have been unveiled by the Home Office.

This shake up is part of the government's new annual limit on non-EU workers, which will take effect on 6 April. At the end of last year the Home Office announced that 20,700 visas will be made available to skilled workers applying through Tier 2 of the points-based system, as well as 1,000 visas under a new exceptional talent route.

Under the new system, employers will have to apply for a certificate of sponsorship from the UK Border Agency for a specific post if they wish to bring someone to the UK - this is a change from the current system which gives businesses an annual allocation.

The government has also announced that employers filling a vacancy that attracts a salary of £150,000 or more will not be subject to the limit on the number of certificate of sponsorship that may be allocated.

The Repair Bills Arrive from the Housing Boom

The U.S. construction boom between 2000 and 2005 added more than 10 million apartments, condominiums, and single-family homes to the nation's housing stock. Although that building frenzy is long gone, it's still generating a repair bill for construction flaws that may hamper the industry's recovery. Homes with cracked foundations and sagging ceilings will only add to the supply of hard-to-sell properties, says Jack McCabe, chief executive officer of McCabe Research & Consulting, which tracks real estate. "A lot of construction flaws slipped through the cracks," he said. "We're just on the cusp of it now"

Learning to love procurement

"Selling to a procurement department is like playing tennis against a giant octopus: if one tentacle doesn't block your shot another one will." According to this blog in the Harvard Business Review at least, that's how it can feel. The author recommends that you bring procurement into the fold early in the sales cycle by engaging with them and demonstrating that you appreciate their expertise.

Time to bring touch back to the office
