Next moves for the modern expatriate |
According to a report published by the Economist magazine, if globalisation is seen as inexorable then companies, to a greater or lesser extent, will need a globally mobile workforce tasked with administering their far-flung but rapidly growing operations. With demand stagnating in Western markets, the pressure to expand abroad in the search for revenue growth is intensifying, especially in emerging markets where the operating environment can be particularly challenging.

Is the rise of India good for American jobs? |
India is producing a legion of new global giants that are competing head-to-head with established American companies. Twenty years ago India had no global companies worth mentioning. Today the Tata group earns 60% of its revenues abroad, and Indian companies ranging from natural-resource firms, such as Reliance Industries, to health-care companies, such as Pirmal Healthcare, have been snapping up American brands.
Half of Silicon Valley's start-ups were either founded or co-founded by Indians. But these paragons are now returning en masse to the mother country (just as America makes life more difficult for immigrants).

One in five employees will use social networks such as Twitter as their main business communication tool by 2014, analyst firm Gartner has predicted.
This trend will be driven by the greater availability of social networking services, coupled with changing demographics and work styles, according to Monica Basso, research vice-president at Gartner.
"In the past, organisations supported collaboration through email and highly structured applications only," she said. "Today, social paradigms are converging with email, instant messaging and presence, creating new collaboration styles."
