North American Mobility Survey
| |
A recent North American Mobility Survey conducted by CERC reported that the top three destinations for assignments within Canada are Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. For the U.S., top destinations are New York, with Houston and Denver tied for second spot and San Francisco a close third. Other findings are that family issues were identified as the number one reason most often cited by employees when turning down a cross border move, 43% of respondents have a cross-border mobility policy and expectations for relocation volumes for the coming 12 months appear to have stabilized.

Canada's Long Form Census |
There has been much press about the Federal government's decision to scrap the mandatory long form census. Canada's employment picture
|
The most recent jobs report from Statistics Canada signals a cooling off from the record number of jobs created in June. Speculation is that of the 139,000 full time jobs that are reported as lost 65,000 will return in September when schools reopen across the country. A closer look at the figures also shows that manufacturing added 28,500 jobs in July, a very positive signal for a battered industry. Read more |

The Talent Mismatch
|
According to international recruiting firm Manpower's David Arkless, "The talent mismatch is causing tremendous frustration for companies, who are seeing no shortage of applicants coming through their doors, but without the skill fit they need," said Arkless. "It is also incredibly frustrating for the individual, who may have the right skills, but find themselves in the wrong part of the country or the wrong part of the world."

Global real estate trends
|
While Canada and Australia posted impressive year over year gains in average house prices in the first quarter of 2010, the global market is cooling according to recent reports from Scotiabank. The slowdown has been most dramatic in Canada. Average home prices in Q2 were up just 6.8% y/y, compared with 16.6% y/y in Q1. Sales, while still at a high level, have trended steadily lower alongside reduced affordability and exhausted pent-up demand.
