All eyes are on Toronto this week and the back-to-back G-8 and G-20 summits. At the same time as the G-20 summit, Canadian business leaders will also host the G20 Business Summit (B20) in Toronto on June 25 and 26. The summit chaired by John Manley, CEO of the Canadian Council of CEO's will include two senior business leaders from each G-20 country.
 
One of the key areas under discussion will be increased global trade of which talent mobility is such an important component. Changes to Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program
 
CanadaThe Government of Canada has recently introduced new rules governing the Temporary Foreign Worker Programs (TFWP).
 
The new rules impose minimum advertising requirements that must be met by employers before hiring temporary foreign workers in occupations that are considered to be within the "B" "C" and "D" NOC categories.

Government ends IT Specialists program

   
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada has recently announced plans to terminate the highly successful IT specialists program effective September 30, 2010. Under the facilitated process, an employer is not required to obtain a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) in order to hire foreign workers in seven specific IT occupations. New rules mean that employers wishing to hire an IT specialist must now apply for a LMO.

More executives are willing to relocate
 
A recent survey of CEO's in 65 countries conducted by the Korn/Ferry Institute found that 82 per cent of respondents are willing to relocate for employment, providing it's the right career opportunity. According to the report, "the speed of globalization is tearing down boundaries at an unimaginable pace." Only 8 percent of executives reported turning down an international work assignment.

Canada can thrive in the looming global talent wars

HistoricaJanice Stein, director of the Munk School at the University of Toronto, said results of a Pulse of the world's perceptions of Canada and Canadians survey suggests Canada can thrive in the looming global talent wars.
 
According to the international survey commissioned by the Historica-Dominion Institute in partnership with the Munk School of Global Affairs and the Aurea Foundation, more than half of the people in the world's 24 leading economies would select Canada as the place to live. Interestingly, almost one-third (30%) of Americans would choose Canada.

Federal, provincial and territorial governments agree to improve Canada's immigration system
 
CICFederal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for immigration met in Ottawa recently to discuss ways to improve Canada's immigration system, given its increasing importance to Canada's future.
 
"If Canada wants to succeed in the global economy, our country must be able to attract and retain immigrants with the skills it needs today while preparing us to face the challenges of the future," said Jason Kenney, federal Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism.
 
Think tank calls for more labour mobility in Canada
 
OttawaThe Macdonald-Laurier Institute, an Ottawa based think tank, recently issued a study, "Citizen of One, Citizen of the Whole", calling on the federal government to use its constitutional authority to strike down internal barriers to free trade and mobility within Canada.
 
Employee turnover on the rise
 
Help wantedNearly a quarter of UK employees plan to leave their job in the next 12 months, a survey of 4,000 workers revealed recently.
 
The study, by market research company GfK NOP, shows that 13% of workers plan to leave "as soon as possible", with a further 11% hoping to leave within a year.

Board members provide the direction and leadership vital to the organization's future success. Board members bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise from diverse backgrounds that position CERC as a leader in the workforce mobility and relocation industry in Canada. Through their active participation, Board members experience tremendous opportunity for both personal and professional growth. Nominations to the CERC Board are being accepted until June 30th and will be presented for approval by the membership at the annual meeting of members on September 21, 2010.
 
Sue Ryan Award
 
Sue RyanIn memory of the late Sue Ryan, the CERC Board of Directors announced the establishment of an annual award at the 2009 CERC conference. This award will recognize exceptional service and quality by a CERC Service Member in their profession, and also recognize significant contributions to community service through volunteerism. The recipient of this award will be honoured at the CERC annual conference each year. Nominations for this Award will be accepted between May 1 and June 30.
