CERC responds to Minister of Immigration
 
CICCERC recently provided comments about Canada's Economic Immigration Program to Immigration Minister Jason Kenney as part of Citizenship and Immigration Canada's consultations. Our main message to the Minister is that Canada must resist pressure to invoke short term protectionist measures that will only serve to impede its ability to attract the skilled workers it will need in the very near future.
 
Canada and Ontario to extend Immigration Agreement
   
Ontario flagCanada and Ontario recently agreed to extend the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement which provides ongoing funding for immigrant settlement services including employment services and language training.

New rules for moving companies
 
Industry Canada wants to tighten the rules for moving companies after a deluge of complaints from consumers who say they've been ripped off by crooked operators. Note to readers: According to the Canadian Association of Movers, 1.2 million households move each year in Canada, not the 1.2 million households over five years as reported in the article.

Employee engagement on the rise
 
According to a recent report from Kelly Services, the most 'engaged' employees are in North America, where 52 percent say they are 'totally committed' to their job, compared with 47 percent in Asia Pacific and 36 percent in Europe. The Kelly Global Workforce index of some 134,000 people around the world also found that 1 in 5 respondents work outside traditional employment relationships.

Unemployment rate down

Help wanted
Employment increased by 109,000 in April, the largest monthly gain in percentage terms since August 2002. The unemployment rate edged down 0.1 percentage points in April to 8.1%, as more people participated in the labour market. All of the jobs were in the private sector with 44,000 full time jobs and 65,000 part time jobs created.

U.S. President to fix broken U.S. immigration system
 
USA_Presidential_sealU.S. President Obama recently spoke of the need to fix that country's broken immigration system and require 11 million illegal immigrants to "get right with the law." New legislation will impose tougher penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants and sets clearer rules for controlling future immigration levels.
 
Arizona law stirs immigration debate
 
ArizonaScheduled to take effect over the summer, Arizona's new immigration law has stirred debate and drawn condemnation from other U.S. cities and government leaders. The new law allows local law enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration laws and arrest undocumented immigrants.

CERC_IdeogramEach year the Nominating Committee of the CERC Board of Directors issues a call for applications to the Board. Board members provide the direction and leadership vital to the organization's future success. Board members bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise from diverse backgrounds that position CERC as a leader in the workforce mobility and relocation industry in Canada. Through their active participation, Board members experience tremendous opportunity for both personal and professional growth. Nominations to the CERC Board will be presented for approval by the membership at the annual meeting of members on September 21, 2010.
 
Sue Ryan Award
 
Sue RyanIn memory of the late Sue Ryan, the CERC Board of Directors announced the establishment of an annual award at the 2009 CERC conference. This award will recognize exceptional service and quality by a CERC Service Member in their profession, and also recognize significant contributions to community service through volunteerism. The recipient of this award will be honoured at the CERC annual conference each year. Nominations for this Award will be accepted between May 1 and June 30.
