Who will fill all the jobs?

Ottawa is woefully unprepared to deal with the looming shortage of skilled labour, and business leaders and government need to get their heads out of the sand before it's too late, a meeting of business leaders heard recently. According to Linda Duxbury, professor of organizational health at Carleton's Sprott School of Business, employers haven't caught up to the fact that simple demographics are propelling them rapidly from a buyer's market to a seller's market.

Canada and British Columbia sign new agreement on immigration

BC flagCanada and British Columbia recently signed a new agreement on immigration. According to Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, "It will certainly strengthen British Columbia's ability to meet its labour market needs both today and in the future." The government announcement states the agreement will facilitate the entry of workers to help British Columbia fill critical labour shortages.

CEOs weigh in on home prices

A recent poll shows that business leaders expect a rise in residential real estate prices over the next 12 months of just 1.75%. That's a modest prediction, given that real estate prices jumped 18% in the past year, and that over the past 20 years, prices increased on average by 3.4%.

Opening up the Multiple Listings Service

MLSThe Canadian Real Estate Association and the Competition Bureau have for months been locked in a debate over the Multiple Listing Service (MLS®). A panel of Canadian CEOs recently surveyed by COMPAS Inc. supports the Competition Bureau's efforts to open the MLS®. Nearly two-thirds of the business leaders surveyed by COMPAS argue property sellers should be able to list on the MLS® without having to use a listing agent or realtor.

Changes to UK immigration law will impact intra-company transfers

UK_flagAccording to the UK's Personnel today magazine, business leaders are split over the changes being made to that country's immigration program which will impact intra-company transfers. Industry experts have warned that changes to the intra-company transfer route (ICT) could put migrants off applying to come to the UK, while employers will have to think more carefully about whether they hire migrant workers for permanent positions.

And in a recent development on this issue, multinational firms have rushed to the defence of immigration changes, claiming the new rules will "make no difference" to UK employers' ability to attract overseas talent.
